Manager of team of seven Automation and Software Engineers in the Automation department. The team maintains existing products (cloud services, desktop software, data products, ...) and built Zymergen's next generation of laboratory automation systems. Today this work continues at Ginkgo Automation.Co-program Manager for Zymergen's modular automation projects.

Architect and tech lead for the control software of Zymergen's reconfigurable modular laboratory automation system (see link below). Selection of technologies used: Python, OPC-UA, Apache Kafka, Kubernetes, Redis, Vue.js, liquid handlers, PCR machines, Magnemotion transport system, PLCs.

Tempo Automation manufactures complex printed circuit board assemblies in days, not weeks. I was part of a small software team creating customer facing and internal software for Tempo's printed circuit board factory. I spent most of my time on feature extraction from CAD design files and instant quoting.

Counsyl (now Myriad Women's Health) is a health technology company that offers DNA screening services. After I started as a generalist automation engineer with contributions to mechanical, electrical and software components, I later led the software development for all automated/robotic systems in the CLIA/CAP/NYS certified laboratory:- software architecture spanning instrument control through robotic work cell scheduling- grew system from workcell scale prototype into robust factory-scale with hundreds of devices and services capable of handling thousands of patient samples daily in 24/7 automated operation with dynamically configurable workflows- manager for a team of four automation engineersSome of the technologies I work with every day: Python, Django, PostgreSQL, Redis, Linux, Windows, SOA, web services, virtualization, Puppet, Packer, Vagrant, Logstash, monitoring, PLC, 6-axis and SCARA robotic arms, liquid handling

Designed and built two miniature modular robot system to explore robotic self-assembly, programmable matter, stochastic factories, and machine ecologies. My work covered all aspects and steps involved in going from idea to completed prototype system with 40 functional robots. Among many other things I developed a tiny solenoid valve for a submerged robot, and a $2 a piece electromechanical connector that lets robots solder themselves into a bigger structure.Tools and technologies I used for my research: Solidworks, 3D Printing, Matlab, Arduino, AVR Studio, PCB Design, EagleCAD, SMT Assembly, Component Sourcing, Solder/Flux Selection, Miniature Valves, Thermorheological Fluids

Assisted with the launch of the German product of the property search engine Nestoria.

Kartensender sends real postcards from smartphone apps. I designed the full stack of technical infrastructure including print file generator, payment systems, i18n, analytics, etc. Managed team of remote contractors, interfaced with business partners, and provided strategic guidance to business owner. Tens of thousands of cards sent annually through iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, webOS and web apps.

Contract work in website and server programming. I had to shut the business down when moving to the United States in order to comply with visa rules.

Design, make and test a novel approach to robot locomotion based on induced resonance. Work published at IROS'2010.

Technical lead of the 35mm film projection room of a volunteer-run ~100-seat cinema at Imperial College’s student union. In charge of all film preparation and projection, staff training, equipment maintenance, and trouble shooting (like that one night when the projector motors overheated in the middle of a Harry Potter screening...)

Manufacturing Maintenance department at Corus Colorcoat in Shotton, Wales (formerly British Steel, today part of Tata Steel Europe)- Involved with daily line maintenance. - Designed pneumatic tool resulting in reduced error rates when mounting 20t steel coils to the production line. - Liaised with contractor during installation of machine conditioning monitoring system and trained my supervisor in its use. - Learned Excel VBA to automate daily report generation for senior management.

Three weeks shadowing an IT team of Infineon's 300mm wafer fab in Dresden during the rollout of the "High Automation" project. I had no idea what I was doing but this internship set the direction for my entire career since then.
