I joined Joint Academy as a contractor during their latest expansion. Initially, I was working with the US expansion team, developing functionality specific to the US market, as a senior Ruby developer. When the company reorganized its teams I was selected to lead the operational tooling team, as one of four technical leads.In that position, I have worked to make sure that the codebase follows best practices, is consistent, and has well-written tests. Since the tests in the project are used for both documentation and API specification (Swagger/OAS) generation, simplicity is extra important. I have also been managing the frontend work for the back office and validated their direction in code reviews and discussions.

I trained their inhouse team in React and Redux, coded prototypes, established testing tiers and discussed the backend infrastructure and service design.All the time I was working closely with the inhouse architects and dev team members as well as the head of development, trying to maximise their leverage of my previous experiences while leaving the decisions up to the team that has to do the work long term.

I worked with Replay Poker as a consultant as a senior developer/technical manager for a year helping them set up for the next few years of growth.We created and started executing an infrastructure migration plan to move from pet, bare metal servers to docker containers hosted on Google Kubernetes. As part of the conversion we also switched the static assets serving from AWS to Google and replaced a self hosted RabbitMQ installation with Google's pubsub service. The main goals were to simplify maintenance, increase scalability and reduce potential error sources in the infrastructure.I also created and vetted a new design for their poker server as well as drawing up a 3-4 year migration plan for large parts of their internal services to get a simpler code base and facilitate changes further along.I also helped with planning and introducing a new planning and development process and while that work is still ongoing some of the changes have made for more consistent documentation of changes and decisions within the tech team as well as an increased feeling of working as a team and better communicating. Things that are very important in a fully distributed team.
