As Chief Scientific Officer for cell and gene therapy in GSK's Rare Diseases Unit I led the development and regulatory review of Strimvelis, the first CD34 Stem Cell Gene Therapy to be licensed anywhere in the world. I also led (for 2 years) the development of a similar gene therapy project for a disease called Metachromatic Leukodystrophy. Both of these programmes were ultimately outlicensed to Orchard Therapeutics in 2018, a transaction that I was involved in shaping and delivering. Whilst in the Rare Diseases unit I was Scientific Adviser on new business opportunities for cell and gene therapy and acted as a rotating member of GSK's Technology Investment Board.Prior to taking the role in rare diseases I worked in a business development function, finding new drug discovery technologies, constructing alliances and managing those alliances. I have 25 years experience of R&D and have worked in all phases of development from target identification through to phase IV in a broad range of therapeutic areas.
