About Jonathan Smith
As a Head of UK Pensions Advisory with 20 years' experience in consulting and asset management, I excel at delivering innovative and bespoke solutions to institutional investors, with a particular specialism in Defined Benefit & Defined Contribution pension schemes. My expertise spans all mainstream and alternative asset classes and derivatives, in both the UK and overseas markets. In my current role, I enable UK pension funds to achieve their objectives by advising on strategies that take into account the client’s funding goals, investment beliefs and tolerance for risk. This advice spans strategic asset allocation, liability hedging policy, asset class suitability, and practical implementation approaches.My responsibilities also include the day-to-day management of Columbia Threadneedle Investment’s(CTI’s) UK fiduciary offering, including resourcing and recruitment, strategic planning and business development. I also oversee Asset Liability Modelling and am a key member of our Model Portfolio Group. I am particularly adept at leading teams through change, even during challenging periods, as most recently demonstrated by my experience as Head of Solution Design at BMO. Notwithstanding Covid-19 and CTI’s acquisition of BMO, I transformed the team from one focused on LDI structuring and reporting, into a broader investment solutions team that underwrites the success of multiple lines of CTI’s institutional business. I also successfully led the team through the 2022 UK Gilt crisis, helping to ensure successful client outcomes during a period of intense market stress.In my experience prior to BMO, I demonstrated an ability to build successful businesses, and to craft and present strategic advice to a range of clients, including individual savings and insurance providers. I am also a qualified actuary. I have frequently contributed to the development of my sector through public-speaking events and written thought pieces.
