I graduated in Physics from Imperial College in 1980 and completed a Diploma of Imperial College in Plasma Physics in 1981. I obtained a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from Kings College, London in 1984 and completed a Doctorate in Mathematics from Jyvaskyla University in 2010. From 1984 to 1988, I was a Research Fellow of Physics at Kings College specializing in developing inverse scattering solutions for applications to the interpretation of Synthetic Aperture Radar images working for the UK Ministry of Defense. In 1988, I joined the Applied Mathematics and Computing Group at Cranfield University as Senior Lecturer and Head of Group where I promoted postgraduate teaching and research in Applied Mathematics focusing on Computer-Aided Engineering and Digital Communications Engineering.In 1994 I was appointed Professor of Applied Mathematics and Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at De Montfort University, where I established new post-graduate teaching and research programs. From 2003-2008, I was Visiting Professor at Loughborough University where I co-founded the Applied Signal Processing Research Group and from 2003 to date, have been Professor Extraordinaire of Computer Science at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa, where I teach Cybersecurity.In 2007, I was elected a Fellow of the City and Guilds London Institute and made a Freeman of the City of London for my contribution to vocational education and economics, respectively. After a parallel career in the scientific civil service, academia, and industry, in 2008, I was elected to the position of the Science Foundation Ireland's Stokes Professor (named after the Irish Mathematician and Physicist, George Gabriel Stokes), appointed Distinguished Professor in the Center for Advanced Studies at Warsaw University of Technology, Poland, in 2010 and Honorary Professor of the Technological University Dublin in 2012.From 2013-2016, I was Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. I currently hold professorships with universities in the UK and overseas while directing R & D programs for the UK defense and intelligence sectors and in industry, focusing on post-quantum cryptography, and, more recently, biosecurity.I have supervised over 250 MSc/MPhil, 72 Ph.D., and 28 post-doctoral research students in the fields of physics, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. I have published over 300 papers, 16 books, 24 patents and technologies to license, and secured research grants with a total income in excess of £66M.
