Leading HSE's research activities in Lithium Ion Battery Safety.

I work within the Hazardous Materials Team in the Major Hazards Section.I lead HSL's work in Battery Safety, encompassing many areas from the small scale to the larger scale scenarios encountered in Energy Storage applications and the recycling industries. We deploy a cross-disciplinary core team which apart from myself includes fire experts and electrical and control systems engineers, and as projects require can add experts from a variety of other teams including explosive atmospheres, video, gas and chemical analysis, noise and risk assessment.As befits the current state of use within the UK, much of this work is focussed on lithium ion cells. We are, however, mindful of the future, and keep a watching brief on all developments.Much of my work is experimental science. Apart from the work with batteries, I maintain a portfolio of other work with hazardous or reactive materials. Current special interests include Oxidisers and Water Reactive Chemicals.Other sides of my work are the predictive assessment of COMAH safety reports as part of the Competent Authority, and the delivery of a variety of training courses.
