I am the lead contact for Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) activity for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, their families and their schools. I coordinate a range of activities and liaise with multiple stakeholders to ensure that specified needs are being met. I also monitor the progress that pupils are making and champion inclusion in the education setting. As SENDCo, I developed and oversaw the implementation of the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) strategy and policy at the school, for pupils ranging from nursery-age to Year 6. A key part of this role was in ensuring that the ‘plan, assess, do and review cycle’ was ingrained throughout the school so that pupils with SEND could be identified and supported effectively. This included making referrals to professionals outside of the school, supporting teachers and families, and managing and advising on the school budget and resources for SEND provision. I also coordinated assessments of pupils with SEND to identify their needs and to monitor the progress that they had made. I also led a number of staff training sessions based around different areas of SEND, including assessment, monitoring progress and promoting inclusive practice. This role was a senior leadership position which required me to line manage a proportion of the school staff and to regularly meet with school governors and inspectors.

Before becoming SENDCo at Barton Hill Academy, I taught in Year 6 and Year 4. As class teacher, I was required to plan, teach and assess lessons across the whole primary curriculum on a full-time basis. I was also required to deliver staff training, lead parents evening and monitor and discuss pupil progress. As the maths lead, I was also part of the leadership team. In this role I carried out lesson observations and provided feedback to teachers to help them develop their practice. I also led Continued Professional Development (CPD) events, wrote the school maths policy and was responsible for reviewing data across the whole school which I would present at academy trust meetings and school governor meetings.
