I started work in the mid-1980s in a recently formed team called Tactical Exploitation within the Ocean Sciences Division of the Admiralty Research Establishment. Within days I was working with the RAF during a Nimrod sortie and within months I'd been on a research ship and worked in the Arctic. After a couple of years I'd spent months on submarines. In about 1990 an opportunity to do a 2 year stint with DSTO in Australia came up. I devised and sea tested a tactical decision aid for diesel submarines and undertook a range of ocean science tasks. When back in the UK my focus was initially specifying future and, assessing and improving in-service sonars on ships, submarines and helicopters. Subsequent work on tactical development led to some interesting concepts. A decade or so ago I shifted focus towards understanding, assessing and improving signatures. All the above fundamentally involve understanding and exploiting the environment - tactical exploitation! So, I've been doing the same thing for 30 odd years! This can't have been too bad a thing - in 2021 I was honoured by being made a MBE for my services to Naval Operational Effectiveness.I've had a fortunate career including many months in submarines and on frigates in various oceans working closely with operators. Drawing upon the skills and expertise of a broad envelope of scientists, engineers and mathematicians has been key to many success.
