About Jonathan Coles
Volunteering sparked my passion for teaching...and this was at a time when teaching was not at the forefront of my mind. It was while studying for my history degree - and looking for a break from my then second home, aka the university library - that I became involved in a scheme that placed students in local primary and secondary schools. I chose a placement in a nearby primary school and quickly discovered that I had found my calling. Week after week, I saw the impact that the staff had on the achievement and also self-esteem of the pupils in their care and, to be honest, I truly envied them - I realised that this was a career in which I could change the lives of others, and this ambition has driven me ever since. Becoming a primary class teacher opened my eyes to the array of opportunities out there to develop young people. After a few years, I was asked by my then headteacher to consider signing up for the 'Mathematics Specialist Teaching' qualification - I was so glad I did because it allowed me to see the processes by which children actually build mathematical understanding. The knowledge and expertise I gained developed my own subject knowledge and had a clear impact on pupils' attainment, but gave me the power to help children love learning - and there is nothing more powerful than that.Since then, I have become a Local Authority writing moderator for Key Stage Two which has been fantastic in developing my knowledge of the English curriculum and finding creative and engaging ways of delivering it. Furthermore, my most recent work experience has allowed me to gain experience of using technology, for example video messenging and even Virtual Reality, to enhance children's learning. Alongside this, I hope that I have never lost touch with what it is to be a learner - studying creative writing and astronomy with the Open University have kept me connected with how it feels to be on the other side of the 'chalk face'. Volunteering while at university all those years ago had a huge and profound impact on my life - everything I have done and the career decisions I have taken have all focused on that one central ambition.
