About Jonathan Collins

I am incredibly passionate about all things aviation and have devoted much of my professional career to pursuing flight safety and the development of pilots in training.Born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, I was privileged to be able to pursue my childhood love of flying, beginning flight training while still attending school. Upon graduation from the 43 Air school, I served as an Instructor and went on to join FlySafair as an airline pilot.In early 2020, my airline pilot career was suddenly interrupted when I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Instead of accepting my condition as a permanent disqualification from flying, I elected to use this opportunity to challenge beliefs and motivate change in Civil Aviation Medicine.After two years of persistent advocacy, I have recently become the first South African (and African) pilot with Type 1 Diabetes to be issued with a Class 1 Aviation Medical by the South African Civil Aviation Authority. This is a major advancement for Civil Aviation Medicine and puts South Africa at the top with industry leaders like Australia, Canada, UK and USA.I am now determined to continue my professional airline pilot career whilst continuing to contribute to the field of Diabetes Advocacy and Civil Aviation.
