Fortescue Zero is the technology arm of Fortescue, a Power System provider with a mission to deliver a real-zero decarbonised operation to Fortescue's mining operations, and deliver products into Heavy Industry, Automotive and Motorsport markets. My role is to deliver the systems integration, analysis and test&validation across all D&D programmes, with a team of 100 talented and dedicated engineers.

Previously operating as WAE (and Williams Advanced Engineering before that) - a class-leading consultancy of advanced engineering working across multiple engineering sectors. Head of the Vehicle Integration, Mechanical Systems and CAE departments (up to 90 people), in addition to providing governance to multiple projects and leadership to the WAE automotive and heavy industry business streams.The Vehicle Integration group provides project technical lead and specialities including full vehicle integration, dynamics, requirement management and DVP management. it also delivers systems and integration of systems across powertrain, energy storage integration, thermal management and structures. The CAE group provide stress analysis, vehicle simulation, thermal modelling and aerodynamics.

Chief Engineer and Lead Engineer - Vehicle Integration, providing the Technical Lead on vehicle programmes, including the highly acclaimed Singer DLS and the Vanda Dendrobium. Client interaction, attribute setting, benchmarking, packaging studies, design guidance, project management, DFMEA, development validation planning, legislation and more.

Hewland Engineering is a high-performance transmission product supplier. As Technical Director, I led all technical aspects including providing new technical solutions and with influence to company strategy. Design office management of transmission designers, design analysts and control engineers. Project management, training and resource/budget planning. Providing design sign-off, and orchestrating changes to formalise this process. Improving engineering change control and quality assurance, processing/reporting of product failures and warranty claims. Significant improvement made to analysis techniques, interpreting results, understanding load cases, shock-events and reporting thereof.During my tenure I oversaw the simultaneous specification, design and validation of 6 new Electric Vehicle transmissions into the FormulaE championship. I also successfully resolved fundamental durability issues for a new product for the company's major client.

Managing a team of 20 Designers (Mechanical and Composite) to translate the Chief Designer’s technical direction into released designs with an overview of entire car layout and functions. Mechanical and composite focused but with interaction with dynamics, aerodynamics and electrical. Design sign-off of the majority of components. Design team resource, project planning and day-to-day management of the group. Recruitment to expand the design resource, whilst providing personal development through development plans, appraisals and regular one-on-one contact. Ensuring rapid delivery of rectifications for service concerns and failures from the reliability faults register. Previously Head of Mechanical Design, managing the Mechanical Design department to deliver all mechanical aspects of the car including front and rear suspension, braking system, hydraulic PAS steering system, engine oil and water cooling, hybrid cooling systems and power electronics couplings.Initially Head of Powertrain Integration, the design contact for the team’s engine and gearbox/hydraulics/hybrid suppliers. This entailed overall design responsibility and liaison with suppliers, project planners and designers to provide an optimum installation.

Xtrac is the World’s leading supplier of transmissions for top level professional Motorsport and high-performance Automotive applications. Its methodical approach to precision design engineering, and onsite manufacturing instilled my core engineering foundation.During my 8 year tenue, I fulfilled a number of senior design roles including Principal Engineer. As manager of the “Make-to-Print” team of 8 engineers to Production Engineer F1 customer drawings including the stage-drawing creation, manufacture methods, tooling, inspection and gauging requirements. Management of the clients’ high expectations and of the group’s workload whilst working in unison with the commercial and manufacturing depts and the project manager to achieve targets.Previously Senior Project Engineer. Functions included advanced design of gears and splines, and further analysis of their ratings, including loaded tooth contact analysis (LTCA).Initially design and senior design roles leading flexible teams of 2 to 5 designers to produce full gearbox design projects, seeing these through to R&D and then production. Control of the total engineering activities for the Touring and Sports Car sector of Xtrac’s business. Design of Xtrac’s customer Le Mans sports car and WTCC/BTCC touring car gearboxes (2007); derivatives are still current. Bespoke transmission system for the JCB DieselMax; a successful wheel driven diesel land speed record vehicle.In addition to design activities, I became a key track support engineer, by providing technical and sales support. 3 seasons supporting the BTCC (British Touring Car Championship), 2 seasons and supporting over 20 cars at the Le Mans 24hr, and 3 years supporting F1 including Head of F1 Track Support when this support operation expanded at the launch of Xtrac’s maiden complete F1 gearbox for 3 teams (25% of F1 grid).
