We were different because we treated a company's Internet presence as a service, not a commodity.The hosting world was in its infancy, the software was buggy and the computers were slow, but it was always exciting.Genuinely a case of not knowing what would happen next because the technology and market was shifting so quickly.I started answering phones on the technical support line and ended up staying, becoming a systems administrator, then a manager for the technical team.I built servers, from scouring computer fairs for the right hardware through to software installation and configuration.We looked at Debian when Debbie and Ian were an item. We look at some new fangled language called PHP. We ran Java applets that allowed people to show shimmering reflections of mountains; IYKYK.We developed a crazy fax-2-email system for a big client, we ran Pentium 2s before Microsoft would offer support as they were too new to be certified.Every day was different, every fire needed fighting. Along the way, I also had to get some training in Lotus Domino Server, but I'm still trying to forget that.Most of all, I got to communicate. Whether it was with customers, suppliers or internal discussions, I realised very early on that communication is (and, I think, always will be) the biggest issue. I sat between the tech and the business, the techies and the business people and loved it.
