my name is Jonathan. I’m a principal at Well Grounded Real Estate, a development and investment firm that is emerging as a leader for the delivery of sustainable apartments. I love the multidisciplinary nature of development, from engineering, design, construction, energy usage, physics, 3D modelling, city building, finance, and human behaviour in terms of space creation. It is no exaggeration to say this is one of the most integrated and multidisciplinary fields there is. I'm a bit of a generalist. My background is in the sciences, where I hold a PhD in Neuroscience from Queen’s University, and I love the technical side of the building industry. I see the major problem we face as housing providers is technical in nature, which would solve much of the financial problems. I believe our greatest challenge is how to create a housing delivery system that is capable of scale, in contrast to the traditional project-by-project approach that the industry has adopted. I believe our failure to keep up with housing demand is a systemic one, and thus we need interventions at the systems level to make a meaningful dent in our housing shortage. At Well Grounded Real Estate, we aim to initiate a new era for mid-market apartment buildings, which have been crucial for affordable living in Toronto for over a century.
