The Biodiversity Consultancy is a specialised consultancy providing technical and policy expertise in biodiversity issues to the private, public and civil society sectors alike. The consultancy brings rigorous, creative, real-world solutions to emerging biodiversity challenges such as biodiversity offsets, protected areas management, biodiversity indicators, and biodiversity impact assessment. Based in Cambridge, UK, TBC maintains close links with international NGOs and research institutions to bring state-of-the-art experience in helping developers - whether public or private - manage biodiversity responsibly and reduce their impact on the environment. Recent technical successes include pragmatic biodiversity metrics and currencies, biodiversity offset design and implementation, integration of mining and local community needs into protected area management, and the design and implementation of methods to comply with emerging bank criteria such as IFC PS6. As a result of this work, TBC now holds a unique seat between the business, NGO and research sectors, providing the world of business and biodiversity with a new resource for problem solving and a new platform for cross-sector engagement.

A committee of scientists worked as an advisory panel on the impacts of the QMM Rio Tinto mine in SE Madagascar. It was a fantastic team, with Dr Pete Lowry as President. The committee looked at a broad range of environmental and social issues, with a specific focus on Rio Tinto's and QMM's commitment at the time to have a Net Positive Impact on biodiversity.

Strategic advisory to this large mining project. Creating a new legal framework, biodiversity basis and engagement with local communities to form a new Govt agreed Management Plan for the Pic de Fon Classified Forest.

PhD research on the ecology of the Greater Vasa Parrot (University of Sheffield) and teaching of Master's students. Three years fieldwork based in the village of Marofandilia, Kirindy forest, Western Madagascar.

A biodiversity research and conservation project in New Caledonia involving the universities of Cambridge, Paris and Noumea, the Musée Nationale d’Histoire Naturelle (Paris), BirdLife International, the Australian Museum, the governments of New Caledonia and several national NGOs. Working with the local Kanak communities, a team of 12 conducted biodiversity assessments across the island and set conservation priorities for the country. This project also rediscovered a presumed extinct species of bird and found two new species of reptile to science.
