Hi! My name is Jonathan Wing and I'm currently a graduate student at the University of Tennessee. I currently work in the department of nuclear engineering under Dr. Ivan Maldonado doing work to characterize spent fuel from advanced reactors with respect to criticality and shielding behaviors. In Fall of 2022 I received a certificate of completion of a SCALE criticality safety course from Oak Ridge National Laboratory.The primary focus of my work has been studying the spent fuel behavior of pebble bed reactor fuels and sodium fast reactor fuels. In studying pebble bed reactor spent fuel, I have developed several models to analyze both criticality of package designs and analysis to make sure that the package designs tested are in accordance with current regulations. The results of my research include: A framework to use for the analysis of advanced reactor spent fuels Reports on mitigating excess criticality while maximizing SNF container capacity for pebble bed fuelsAn upcoming paper to support the application of burnup credit to PBR fuelsAn upcoming paper that establishes the safety of TRISO kernel extraction and repackaging for waste volume reductionUpcoming reports on SFR spent fuel behavior, criticality mitigation options for SFR fuel storage and transportation, application of burnup credit to SFR fuels, and dose rate behavior of spent SFR fuel.Other research results include:Support of fusion reactor activation analysis and waste classificationAn analysis of High Level Waste classification when subjected to classification under Low Level Waste standards
