Barbican Library

I oversee the various IT elements of the City's lending library’s work, especially pcs and software used by staff and the thin clients and OPACs providing internet access and catalogue information to the public. I have day to day responsibility for the management of IT related projects including the Barbican Library’s RFID security/stock management system and the resources in use in Artizan Street Library. As part of the library’s management team, I deal with timetabling, staffing and building issues. I am involved in interviewing prospective staff and supervise their training. My responsibilities as Duty Manager remain.

Barbican Public Library

Based in the Barbican Public Library, my working day involved enquiry desk duties in a busy and challenging environment, answering both bibliographic and reference queries, whilst employing electronic tools, including internet searches and CD-Rom based systems. My principal responsibilities included stock work and the provision of Inter-library loan material, for which I managed a team of four staff. I was responsible for their training and managed the team closely. I provided analysis of patterns of use of our stock and material borrowed on behalf of our readers, presenting the results in concise graphical reports. I was actively involved in themed promotional display activities. I maintained the Society of Technical Analysts collection, organising the cataloguing of new stock. I acted as the duty manager for the library on a regular basis, also assisting at other branches and service points when required to do so.

Kensington Central Library

I was responsible for the provision of library services for children and teenagers in the North Kensington area, a role that required managing a budget of £20,000 in 1994/95. As well as enquiry desk duties, I was involved in the setting up of an Employment Resource Centre.
