A general enthusiast on all things relating to life in the past, present and future. What, where, how and why processes occur, and the ways we can improve or change them, deeply intrigue me. My philosophy: "Be better, get better, help more".I have a background in biology, with a focus on marine ecology and conservation. To address questions in this domain, I use statistics, machine learning and spatial analyses, implemented in R and ArcMap (also QGIS), to wrangle, explore, model and communicate information about large datasets. I actively participate in continued learning opportunities to always enhance these skills.Core skills include:- Experimental design and data collection- Descriptive statistics and visualisation- Dimensionality reduction- Linear & Nonlinear regression- Classification & Unsupervised learning- Resampling methods- Machine learning- Model validation & Forecasting
Listed skills include Data Analysis, Marine Ecology, Conservation Issues, Ergonomics, and 17 others.

With my background as a research scientist and domain knowledge in biology and data analysis, I tutor students on these topics. Topics include general biology, statistics, machine learning and coding in R.I actively participate in skills-based continued learning opportunities.I also work as an editor of academic articles and continue to provide support and analysis to environmental NGOs.
I have presented at numerous international conferences (winning awards for best student speaker), and to schools, groups and businesses on topics relating to:- Marine science, ecology and conservation- Data, what is it, and how can it help us make better decisions?- Lessons from Science applied to life and businessHappy to chat to your organisation. I have held various roles leading and managing people. Furthermore, I actively seek opportunities to enhance my knowledge in this domain.2018: Facilitated a multi-partner project to inform the South Georgia and South Sandwhich Islands government of the efficacy of their sustainable use marine protected area for multiple species.2014-2017: Academic development and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students.2005 -2016: Rowing coach. Coaching of teenagers and adults at various national levels. Crews have placed first in the country.2010-2014: Lead and organised teams for research expeditions in South Africa and the Falkland Islands.2008: President Rhodes University Rowing Club. Lead and managed all mens and womens rowing teams at the university2007: Indoor rowing programme coordinator (Nombulelo High School, South Africa). Lead organiser of the indoor development rowing programme2004: Prefect

Using spatial analyses, I analysed nearly 10 000 000 locations points, from 2351 animal tracks, spanning 25 years of data from 12 species, to identify sites of conservation priority for marine animals at a British Overseas Territory. I communicated this data by reporting to government regarding the efficacy of a sustainable use marine protected area design. I achieved this using R and ArcMap (GIS platform), by improving upon and developing custom code to automate the delineation process, while also building in conditional checks to identify problems. I led successful collaborations with an inhouse team and international experts, and we delivered a new set of candidate areas for conservation.

Research profile: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Jonathan_HandleyMy research focuses on the foraging ecology of marine top predators. I utilise biologging technology (TDR, GPS, Accelerometer, Animal-borne video cameras) and direct and indirect methods of dietary analysis to answer pure and applied questions. Fundamentally, these questions relate to the intra-specific (within species) and inter-specific (across species) interactions between organisms and their physical environment. I use these answers to provide advice and direction for governments, business and the scientific community, to conserve species and sustainably manage resources.Key topics addressed during the PhD:- Machine learning: Developed an algorithm (Support Vector Machine) to classify animal behaviour based on outputs from accelerometer data.- Statistics/Machine Learning/Spatial analyses: Utilised an ensemble modelling approach (GLM, GAM, Random Forest, Boosted Regression Tree) to develop an algorithm for estimating the probable locations of animals in unsampled locations.- Statistics: Comparing the behaviour of individuals from multiple sites (LME)- Statistics: Determined the probability of individuals for interacting with certain environmental features (LR)Additional:- Statistics: Understanding the role environmental variables play in driving the distribution of a marine top predator (Zero-truncated GLM)Key project partners include:- British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge, UK- Nelson Mandela University Marine Apex Predator Research Unit, Port Elizabeth, South Africa- Falklands Conservation, Stanely, Falkland Islands- South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute, Stanley, Falkland Islands
