I am a senior executive with 28 years of experience in the energy industry. In my career I have focused on strategy and business development across the value chain from upstream resources and renewable technology through to generation, LNG, trading and retail. I combine a deep knowledge for the sector with an ability to identify executable opportunities to capture long term value. The energy industry will continue to undergo dramatic change over the next 15 years as emerging renewable and digital technologies enable new solutions to be found to the challenges of climate change and energy poverty. My experience makes me well suited to navigating the disruption this will cause to create shared value.

I was with Origin for over 20 years and was intimately involved in the company’s development from a small regional gas utility (market cap <$500m) through to a fully integrated energy company with a third of the Eastern Australian energy market and a gas business now focused on international markets through LNG (market cap $10b).My roles in Origin were mainly in the strategy and business development area responsible for strategy formulation, opportunity identification and execution across the group directly supporting the Managing Director and Executive Director, Finance and Strategy. With a strong entrepreneurial bent and a thirst for learning, I was at the start of many of Origin’s new business ventures including geographical expansions domestically and then internationally, and new verticals such as electricity trading and risk management, energy retailing, unconventional gas, LNG and renewables. I have also had experience at the corporate level on major public market transactions: mergers/demergers, takeovers, defence and equity raisings. From 2007 I was responsible for long term growth both organic and M&A, strategic planning and business development and leading strategy discussions with the Executive Management Team and Board. More recently, I have led business development in LNG and renewables across Asia Pacific energy markets developing partnerships and market entry strategy.I bring a strong analytical valuation and risk management framework to all my work and was responsible for developing Origin’s commodity risk management system in the early 2000s which is still in use today.

Following Origin’s acquisition of Contact Energy (NZX 20) in 2004, I spent 3 years as a secondee in the Corporate Development role for Contact in New Zealand reporting to the CEO which provided experience across a broad range of operational areas including investor relations, HSE, HR, brand and communications, consumer marketing, government affairs and regulation.

Grew to lead the electricity trading team (5) responsible for purchasing, trading and risk management for electricity supply business. The role covered supply/demand fundamentals, portfolio strategy, short term trading, long term contract negotiations, counter party relationship management, long term contract negotiations and management. It also supported the business development activity around gas fired generation as part of the the UK’s “dash for gas”.

After graduating from university joined the economics group of the engineering consultancy, Ewbank Preece. Conducted a wide range of consultancy assignments including power sector planning and optimisation studies in developing countries, managing the EU’s energy demonstration project pipeline and dissemination, market research and strategy projects in the aluminium industry and ports. Developed and marketed a multi client study on the implications of European Integration on key industrial market segments.
