About Jonathan Hummel

I am a graduate from the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. I completed the department's concentration in Biochemical Engineering and have a solid theoretical and practical background in biotechnology. While I am quite comfortable in the lab, I also have skills in the area of computational modeling and analysis of complex systems in several languages including MATLAB, VBA, and C#. My most recent professional experience in the biotechnology industry comes from my time as an R&D Applications Engineer at Pall Biotech in Westborough, MA. At first my work was primarily focused on process modeling and process economics analysis, with an emphasis on continuous bioprocessing. I built highly detailed mathematical models of the scalability of downstream mAb purification platforms and used them to simulate manufacturing scenarios in order to evaluate operating costs and explore business cases. This work culminated in a paper that I wrote, the link to which is below. After that, I moved into a new position at Pall as an Engineer II. My work in that role was focused on testing technology used for batch and continuous clarification of CHO cell culture at harvest, as well as continuous, single-pass TFF used for the concentration and diafiltration of mAbs. I also spent much of my time testing new TFF membranes for applications in viral vector purification processes for gene therapy (AAV and Lentivirus). In 2019, I left Pall Biotech to pursue a business plan that I had been developing. This led to me working in a self-employed capacity as a market data analyst and algorithmic trader, mostly in the foreign exchange markets. This role entails me using Microsoft Excel and VBA to create automated workflows for analyzing tens of thousands of historical price data in order to develop trading strategies. Once promising strategies are identified, I automate them for vetting and eventual use in current market conditions using a language called Pine Script, which runs on a Linux server that I configure and host myself. Working in this capacity for over three years has been challenging and profitable. That being said, I strongly desire to return to a scientific setting in industry. This is because my current work lacks the physical context and potential for meaningful positive impact on people that drew me to a scientific background in the first place. I am now actively searching for new employment opportunities in the field of bioinformatics. I am currently working on getting my MS in Bioinformatics to support this career change.
