EXPERIENCE:• As a painter, I've participated in over 30 solo and 50 group exhibitions of my oils (domestic interiors) and watercolors (American landscape).• My pieces are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art.WEBSITE:• I founded "Essential Vermeer" in 2001, which now provides an in-depth overview of Vermeer's life, art, and cultural milieu, featuring web studies, images, interviews, and an interactive catalog of Vermeer's art. My free newsletter keeps thousands updated on the latest Vermeer events and studies. To stay updated, I frequently travel to attend exhibitions and Vermeer events. Would that every important artist were blessed with such a resource."CONFERENCES & MEDIA APPEARANCES:• Lecture: "Questions of Authenticity: What Science Can’t Tell Us" - International Vermeer Symposium, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (2023). My lectures centered on what science can and cannot tell us about "A Young Woman Seated at the Virginals" in the Leiden Collection.• "Dicht bij Vermeer" (Suzanne Raes; 2023): I served both as a painter and Vermeer scholar in the acclaimed documentary. My outside-the-box contributions extend the dialogue about Vermeer's personal and historical significance.• "De Nieuwe Vermeer" (2023): My expertise was featured in two episodes of this highly-rated eight-episode Dutch TV show, designed to honor the "Year of Johannes Vermeer." I offered research-backed insights into the artist's character and his unique technique, as well as creative advice, to selected artists tasked to recreate "lost Vermeers."• HNA/AANS International Interdisciplinary Conference, Boston: I co-chaired the workshop, "Artists in the Age of the Internet: janbrueghel.net, essentialvermeer.com, and the Artist Website" (2014).• "Views on Vermeer: 12 Short Stories" (by Hans Pool & Koos de Wilt; 2009): I was interviewed as a painter and Vermeer expert.• "Brush with Fate" (2002): I was tasked by the Hallmark Hall of Fame to create a fictional painting by Vermeer for the film adaptation of Susan Vreeland's best-selling novel, "Girl in Hyacinth Blue."
