After graduating from the Johanneum Hamburg I decided to take a gap year, in order to acquire new skills which I could not be taught at school or university. While volunteering as a teacher at a South African school, for example, I learned a lot about intercultural communication and teamwork. Back in Germany after three months, I started working in the kitchen of a refugee camp, where I always used my breaks to talk to the refugees and thereby develop a further understanding of their situation. Also I could actively participate in the process of integrating the people living at the camp into German society, for example by helping them learning German or dealing with German authorities. After my work at the refugee camp I went on a three month backpacking trip through Latin America, alone and in the beginning only with very basic Spanish skills. There I could further develop my intercultural competence while also learning things like how to effectively plan my trip while relying on a very limited budget. After returning to Hamburg I started studying history. In two semesters I learned, among other things, how to precisely evaluate political, social or economical situations, and conducting careful and differentiated research in order to do so. For my studies I mostly chose topics concerning foreign policy and international relations. After a year, however, I decided that in order to satisfy my interest in intercultural communication and teamwork, as well as Politics and a global social change, it would be best to study International Relations. I started to do so at the Rhine-Waal University in Kleve in October 2017.
