I am the program manager for our community led research initiatives as part of our ongoing work to expand the coordinated Canadian investigation and adaptation to arising marine issues.

Led the development and implementation of national communications strategy and outreach to national partners and data providers across the country. Writer for both internal and external communications, print and online media. Graphic designer of infographics, iconography, and presentations. Represented CIOOS at regional, national, and international conferences and tradeshows. Led a distributed and dynamic team to achieve collaborative objectives and draw on personal strengths.

On behalf of the Tula Foundation, I worked to build and facilitate a diverse and representative committee from coast to coast to coast to create an actionable plan for Canada’s contribution to the Predicted Ocean outcome of the United Nations Decade for Ocean Science and Sustainable Development (UNDOS). After deliberating, the committee agreed to two goals. First, to make Canada’s ocean prediction capabilities more discoverable through CIOOS, and second, to examine Canadian successes in ocean prediction and create a recipe for success based on those case studies. This work was handed over to a new champion after I was needed in other capacities.

Developed and implemented communications strategy for the Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System (CIOOS) Pacific Regional Association and CIOOS nationally. This national partnership makes Canada’s ocean data more accessible for the benefit of all Canadians. I have been responsible for the development of website, social media, and print content, presentations to regional, national, and international conferences, marketing and training materials, and coordination of a dynamic national team. Also engaged with First Nations, regional, and national data providers to ease data transformation and integration into CIOOS. Co-developed long-form science-based narratives (A Fever on Canada’s Pacific Coast) and interactive data visualizations (Baynes Sound Ocean Monitor).

Science writer for blogs, videos, and social media related to Hakai’s scientific activities. Interviewed scientists, developed infographics, and captured photography that helped tell the story.

Fukushima InFORM was a scientific research program tracking the arrival of radiation from the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident on Canadian shores. I was responsible for coordination of sampling programs across our networks of citizen scientists, First Nations, academic and federal research partners. I compiled, analyzed, and synthesized results, and communicated risk for both public and scientific distribution. I maintained and grew our social media and email marketing audience through regular development of original content for our website in addition to curated science news. Our monthly reach was ~2500 readers through social media, ~600 through email marketing, and ~3500 page views online. I taught 3rd and 4th year undergraduates ISCI 311: The Size of Things and ISCI 360: Systems approaches to regional sustainability. For The Size of Things, I co-developed the new course curriculum to examine the biological, chemical, and physical laws on various spatial and temporal scales from the subatomic to the interstellar and the nanosecond to geologic time, respectively. Topics of instruction included: history of the metric system, bacteria and viruses, isometry and allometry, IPCC AR5 report on climate change, paleoclimate, development of earth's atmosphere, and others. Used current best teaching practices such as jigsaws and distributed learning techniques to develop a student led active classroom. https://intsci.ubc.ca/courses/isci311For Systems Approaches to Regional Sustainability, I coordinated and facilitated a series of guest seminar series and online learning environment where topics ranged from water resources and marine ecosystems to climate change and limits to sustainability. I developed content and designed the websites for Prof. Steven Hallam in Microbiology and Immunology. Content was written both for public and scientific audiences on current research programs and a working group investigating microbial processes in global oxygen minimum zones.
