I am a change maker and change leader in advanced manufacturing, sustainable engineering and energy research, teaching and learning. I hold advisory roles with national and international PRSBs, international research councils, and local and national government agencies. My work is shaping and implementing the UK and Scottish Governments’ vision for a sustainable low carbon transition in energy, transport and manufacturing. I am currently seconded part-time from the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) to East Ayrshire Council as their Chief Scientific and Technical Advisor for the Community Renewable Energy (CoRE) project and I am Chair of the Clean Growth Workstream of the Ayrshire Energy Masterplan for the Ayrshire councils and the Scottish Government.I have established credibility and expertise in developing large-scale trans-national educational projects, leading complex, high-value research projects (H1PERBAT, £18m; H1perChain, £12m) and playing key roles in civic projects and initiatives (Ayrshire Growth Deal, £148m; East Ayrshire Council/UK Government CoRE, £25m). My impactful research continues to deliver innovative solutions to some of the world’s biggest challenges in surface engineering, materials science and engineering, sustainable engineering, AM, renewable energy, food manufacturing, transport and eMobility, and mathematical modelling and AI. This research is world-class with a sustained track record of securing funding of over £7.6m since 2001 from 57 grants from diverse sources such as EPSRC, IUK, APC, H2020, national and internal governments, and national and international industry. I am the founder and Director of the world leading Institute for Sustainable Engineering and Energy (ISEE). ISEE delivers challenge led solutions as well as supporting the science base through a distinctive research portfolio championed across academia, industry and governments, providing the new knowledge and practice needed to transition engineering and energy to more sustainable levels in a just manner for all. I am a Board Member for the Energy Technology Partnership (ETP), and the UWS lead for membership of the Scottish Research Partnership in Engineering (SRPe) and the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (SHFCA). I am the UWS REF Lead for UoA12: Engineering.I have presented and published widely - with 8 books, 16 book chapters, 7 patents and over 180 international journal papers. I am Editor-in-Chief of Lasers in Engineering and the International Journal of Laser Science.
