Hyde Hall is a 50 room limestone mansion built in 1817 by George Clarke, an English member of the landed gentry who came to America to manage the 120,000 acres he inherited from his great-grandfather, also George Clarke, who had served as a colonial administrator of the province of New York under Queen Anne, King George I and King George II. After five generations of Clarke family ownership, Hyde Hall was purchased by New York State in 1963 and has since become a museum and venue for the arts in the Cooperstown region. Hyde Hall is proud to be a partner with Glimmerglass Festival, Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown Summer Music Festival, and the professional actors who dramatize incidents from the mansion's history during our summer ghost tours. Hyde Hall stands today as a testament to the superb workmanship of those who designed and built this amazing Anglo-American masterpiece. The home features exceedingly rare examples of early lighting that still function as they did in the 1820s and 1830s. These include the vapor light chandeliers in the Dining and Drawing Rooms, possibly the only lighting devices of this type that remain in working condition anywhere in the world.Hyde Hall offers visitors an unusual perspective on life in the early years of New York history. Situated on a hill overlooking Otsego Lake with stunning views of Hyde Bay and south to Cooperstown, the mansion has undergone 50 years of restorations and is now a National Historic Landmark and a New York State Historic Site. It has been called "one of the two or three greatest houses in America" (Brendan Gill, architecture critic of The New Yorker).
