My Sasol journey began with the Instrumentation and Control GDP (Graduate Development Program.) I was placed in the Utilities Value Chain Technical Support Team, supporting the Power Station, Gas Turbine and Water Works Units.The first two years of the graduate development program required the completion of various instrumentation and control based competencies, including base-layer and advanced regulatory control, as well as control system hardware installations. I was also involved in project management in the execution phases, focusing mainly on the quality assurance of electrical sub-station installations from a C&I perspective.In my third and final year of the GDP, I rotated back to the Power Station and Water Works units where I replaced the existing C&I engineers, assuming their responsibilities while still completing the relevant competencies.Once appointed as Engineer 1, I continued to support Power Station. My primary roles included Control System maintenance and process optimization of the 17 coal fired boilers and 10 steam turbines across two units.Process control optimization initiatives and investigations included:>Steam and Water Drum level control for improved stability.>Airflow trim control for the purposes of NOx emission reduction.>Air-to-fuel ratio control optimization for improved combustion efficiency.>Header Pressure Stabilization.>Replacement of Mill Feeder Drives and management of change control.I was also involved in the following projects:>Implementation and management of chance of an Boiler Automation System upgrade project, which aimed to replace the Control System and Safety System Hardware on all 17 boilers.>Control System technical support for the Low NOx Burner project, involving the replacement of the existing coal/oil burners, and the installation of flue gas analyzers.
