When a star forms, large amounts of dust and gas remain in orbit around the forming star. This disk of material contains the building blocks for planets, hence the name protoplanetary disk. With the combination of several telescopes, it is possible to image the inner regions of these disks and find the direct imprint of ongoing planet formation. My PhD concerns the identification of the present materials and the detection of these "planet footprints". For this work, we combine state-of-the-art computer models with observational data of the most advanced astronomical instruments currently available.
