I worked in Dr. Justin DiAngelo’s research lab using Drosophila as a model organism to study lipid metabolism. It has been discovered that many genes are involved in regulating lipid droplet formation and storage in Drosophila. One group of genes of interest to our lab includes those involved in mRNA splicing. Our lab has previously shown that group of splicing factors important for intron/exon border recognition known as SR proteins are involved in controlling lipid storage in Drosophila; however, how these SR proteins are regulated to control lipid storage is not fully understood. In Drosophila, three SR protein kinases (SRPKs) have been characterized: SRPK, darkener of apricot (doA), and SRPK79D.We used the Gal4/UAS system to decrease the expression of SRPK, doA, and SRPK79D specifically in the adult female fat body and then performed various experiments to characterize their respective lipid phenotypes. These experiments include, but are not limited to macromolecule assays, CAFE assays, starvation resistance, RNA isolation, Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and western blots.

I worked in Dr. Maureen Dunbar's lab examining the MCF-7 cancer cell line and their proliferative response to estrogen. The aim of the study was to elucidate the mechanism by which alcohol elicits a similar proliferative response through estrogen signaling and examining parathyroid hormone related protein (PTHrp) as a potential inhibitor of alcohol’s effects.Responsibilities included the maintenance of a cancer cell line (MCF-7), determining optimal cell culture conditions, daily data recording, cell counts, western blots, Cell Proliferation assays, and data interpretation. Other responsibilities included participation in group lab meetings, aiding in the development of experimental protocols, and organizing/displaying data for poster presentations.
