My role at Openreach is to install, repair and maintain broadband, fibre-optic and landline telephone networks.I have good practical skills, and can track down and solve problems using electrical theory and specialist equipment. I need to be well organised, able to follow technical diagrams and happy to work as part of a team or on my own in any weather or situation.As a Network Engineer i install, test and repair communications and datacommunications systems, such as:•Fixed-line and mobile telephony networks.•Copper wire and fibre-optic cabling.•VoIP communication systems.•Wireless radio networks providing internet access via PCs, smartphones and tablets.My work can vary in scale from setting up a communications network in a large organisation, to the installation of a home system. This role involves:•Laying, connecting and testing underground and underfloor cabling.•Testing and repairing faults in public and private exchanges.•Designing, building and testing telecommunications components and equipment.•Climbing telegraph poles to carry out routine maintenance or installs.

I was required to install, repair and replace telecommunications equipment, communication networks and satellite systems.Work could range from fitting a new system in a business to repairing and realigning equipment after storm damage on a domestic property.On a typical day, i may have:•Carry out site surveys to prepare plans for jobs.•Plan cabling networks.•Install and fix aerials or satellite dishes to wall mounts.•Connect signal outlet sockets.•Check signal strength levels.•Test equipment and fix faults. I used a variety of equipment, including wiring tools, power drills and signal quality meters. On larger, more complicated installations, i followed detailed engineering design plans.

I was responsible for ensuring the team correctly loaded, unloaded and moved stock manually and by the safe operation of Mechanical Handling Equipment. I have the ability to operate mechanical handling equipment and meet the physical demands of the role. I used computer systems to pick stock and ensure it is delivered to the correct place at the correct time. It is essential for me to have excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a methodical and tidy manner.

This role was primarily safety and security of the submarine and crew. I was accountable to the Officer in charge for various different tasks including:Monitoring the remote Fire Alarm system and taking actions in accordance with Emergency Operating Procedures, as well as taking the appropriate Emergency Operating Procedure actions in the event of any emergency.It was my responsibility to organise and record draft marks on a regular basis to safeguard the vessels buoyancy.To monitor work being undertaken and bring any conflicts to light which could be deemed unsafe or have the potential to escalate to an unsafe or unsecured standard.To maintain the physical security of the submarine ensuring only authorised personnel were allowed to access the security compound or the submarine.To act as an incident board marker and provide assistance as required during any emergency or incident.To control all documentation in my possession, such as logs and records.To carry out daily communication tests.To maintain a high standard of cleanliness at all times in my work area.To be responsible for ensuring personnel had correctly declared their delegated work area.To maintain the Safety Information Board to give visibility of all hazards on the submarine.To deliver clear Health and Safety briefs.To conduct rounds of the jetty and submarine on a regular basis.To ensure any communications or other correspondence were forwarded to the relevant recipient.To inspect and sign for FireFighting equipment including testing ICOM devices.

Hms Talent

As well as keeping all my current role from my previous post at HMS Turbulent I was now in addition required to become the Navigators Yeoman. Working unsupervised directly for the Navigation Officer. Caring for the husbandry and upkeep of the submarines navigational equipment and documents. Maintaining the vessels portfolios of charts and directions using radio communications, weekly Notice to Mariners and corrections from the UK Hydrographic Office. This role requires impeccable organisation skills, self discipline and trust from superiors.

Hms Turbulent

Highly technical job directly responsible for keeping the submarine safe and undetected. Working alongside other members of the Warfare branch. I used a range of advanced systems, including radar and electronic listening equipment to identify and track potential threats and targets. On routine surveillance or going into action. I would give my officers the information they needed to make vital decisions. This put me right in the heart of a tight-knit highly active team.Other duties in the role included submarine safety and security this was achieved by conducting regular guard sentry duties with live weapons. It was also vital to remain current with firefighting and damage control emergency operating procedures.In other duties I was responsible for the high pressure air, hydraulic, nuclear, valves and watertight integrity of the vessel whilst watch keeping below decks.

Hms Drake Smq

Dry phase training of the Submariner qualification. Including intensive academic and practical training assessing submarine safety and system knowledge. Requirement to become a safe submariner before embarking a sea going unit to complete training.

Conducted phase 1 and 2 military and professional training. Learned valuable life long skills in team work, communication, physical activities, firefighting, damage control, first aid, military discipline and much more.
