I undertook analysis of the issues resulting in RON overruns and extensions, with results presented daily to senior management. • Managed the return of HV Plant data to the data management team at SPEN, which involved interfacing with both internal staff and contractors. This allowed the business’s Utility Map Viewer to be updated with accurate schematics and for plant volumes to be claimed in fulfilment of SPEN’s regulatory obligations to OFGEM.• Established an Excel-based dashboard capturing key metrics relating to ED2 investment work for use by engineers and senior management to collate and track ongoing projects. The dashboard interfaced with SAP to pull actual and forecast spend against both discrete and generic projects.
Summer Placement Student
A 10 week placement, spent in the Edinburgh & Borders district as part of my IET Power Academy scholarship.•Analysed the E&B (Edinburgh & Borders) electrical distribution network to collate circuit data and establish performance metrics to inform investment work in ED2 (Electricity Distribution 2, the price control period lasting from 2023-2028), including: o Cable/overhead line lengths o Customer numbers o CI/CML (Customer Interruptions/Customer Minutes Lost) IIS (Interruption Incentive Scheme) penalties o Reportable/non-reportable fault counts o Existing and planned NCPs (Network Controllable Points) o Power cable faults in the last five years•Investigated secondary transformer loadings in E&B district to identify >80% MDI (Maximum Demand Indicator) transformers for priority reinforcement during ED2.•Assisted in the project management required for the uplift of two power regulator assets: o Coordinated crane operator contractor o Obtained relevant landowner contact details o Liaised with relevant highway agency to initiate the application process for a road opening notice to close the nearby bypass o Gathered costs of relevant services and materials for internal financial application•Performed emergency network analysis following a cable fault in central Edinburgh during the Fringe festival to determine possible low voltage power back-feeds to affected secondary substations.•Conducted customer service calls following pre-arranged outages to gather post-outage feedback, enabling the identification of necessary staff behavioural adjustments and the improvement of district performance against key customer service KPIs.•Liaised with craftsmen team leaders to validate submitted data for maintenance and fault repair work.•Evaluated depot waste segregation efficacy in pursuit of a business-wide 95% landfill aversion target to be achieved by 2023.
Summer Placement Student
A 10 week placement, spent with the Automation team in Smart Grid Operations as part of my IET Power Academy scholarship.• Independently built understanding of SAP (enterprise software) and ran asset reports to provide the Automation team with asset age, location and model profiles. Determined telecontrol status of relevant network assets – Switches, Gas Circuit Breakers, Pole-Mounted Switches, Pole-Mounted Auto Reclosers. This allowed for the creation of an asset replacement policy for use in future price controls, RIIO-ED2/ED3 (RIIO: Revenue = Incentives + Innovation + Outputs, ED = Electricity Distribution).• Wrote clear, concise and comprehensive user documentation on how to use SAP and delivered this to the Automation team. • Built a report compiling the telecontrol status of primary/secondary substations and pole-mounted switchgear for a senior manager to present to international Iberdrola partners as part of the INET30 Digital Strategy. Provided an accompanying summary to detail the strategies used to compile the data.• Collaborated with another summer placement student to produce an econometric analysis of Operational IT & Telecoms requested expenditure (CV11) from Ofgem (energy regulator for GB) submitted by the 14 DNOs (DNO = Distribution Network Operator) and 6 DNO groups operating on the UK mainland. Presented summary slides to the Distribution Network Manager, who is a key responsible party in preparing SPD’s (SP Distribution's) ED2 submission.• Used PowerOn Advantage, an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), in conjunction with a SAP asset enquiry to identify and categorise sites with their respective operating voltages as substations, switching stations or points of connection (POCs) in advance of future earthing studies.
