The Whittaker group aims to address important challenges related to the understanding of the relationships among the composition, structure, electronic structure, and properties of inorganic and organic nanomaterials, as well as their composites. Our efforts will be focused into three different directions in the areas of materials chemistry and nanotechnology, i.e., synthetic inorganic-organic chemistry, spectroscopy, and nanofabrication of functional devices.My research explores the correlation between electronic properties and morphology for novel materials such as conductive polymers, coordination polymers, and metal halide perovskites. My research includes the design and optimization of an instrument for the characterization of thermoelectric properties (Seebeck and electrical conductivity) over a range of temperatures. To characterize the morphology and electronic structure, I employ in house techniques including AFM, SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, UPS, confocal Raman and UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy. This characterization is assisted using synchrotron beam line experiments such as GIXD, NEXAFS, and EXAFS.
