SMART is a Partnership of Schneider and Thompson Controls with Sydney Water. As Program Manager I lead the electrical and controls concepts and program for Sydney Water Bondi WWTP's $500M+ Renewal and Resilience Program, actively engaging with multiple stakeholders to ensure its long term success.

Late in 2015 a severe tornado ripped through Sydney's $2B Desalination Plant causing several hundred $M damage. In 2017 I managed the project team of engineers and electricians to test, inspect and repair the damaged electrical, lighting, control and instrument systems, and to restore the plant back to its original condition. Since then I have delivered electrical construction works for Sydney Water's Lower South Creek Project at Riverstone and Quakers Hill.

Lower Hunter

My own business, Hunter Smart were an alliance of project and engineering professionals offering smart system solutions, project management, electrical design, systems integration and supervision of trade, engineering and services to Newcastle, the Hunter Valley, and throughout NSW. I provided engineering advice and managed delivery of energy projects. A key client was Flow Systems (Sydney), a subsidiary of Brookfield Infrastructure, and my most significant project was consulting on the Hydro Smelter redevelopment at Kurri Kurri. I provided engineering options and energy market analysis for re-development opportunities of its heavy electrical and industrial assets.

Narrabri

In 2008 Whitehaven Coal began construction of the $1.0b world class underground Narrabri Mine, now Australia's most productive underground coal mine. As an Electrical Supervisor/Project Manager on the Project Team I participated in strategic and operational planning activities and delivered 3 major and >20 minor projects.1. 66kV sub-transmission power line ($4.5m). Construction of a 66kV high voltage sub-transmission line owned by Country Energy passing through ~20 private properties to supply the new mine from Transgrid’s Narrabri Zone substation. I developed the scope of works, coordinated design process, procured long lead items, assessed risk, negotiated with stakeholders, developed and executed strategies, managed tender process, reviewed bids, selected and supervised contractors, negotiated sensitive commercial, operational and connection agreements, cultivated goodwill and persuaded all stakeholders to go the extra mile, managed compliance with safety systems and environmental requirements, and delivered project on time and $1.2m under budget with no injuries or accidents 2. LV Electrical ($2.3m). Supervised the supply, installation and commissioning of surface electrical infrastructure incl. substations, desalination and pumping systems, building services, HVAC, fire protection, generators, power and light. 3. SCADA, IT & CCTV ($4.9m). Managed design, construction and integration of the SCADA systems and control room, data center, communications networks and associated systems. Narrabri Mine is now regarded as an industry leader setting new standards in this area.

Electrical Design, Engineering and Project Management. Prepared D&C tenders on behalf of electrical contractors to local government agencies and research facilities. Designed and commissioned control systems for feed processing plant. Studied whole-of-plant efficiency and delivered detailed report identifying potential energy savings for food processing plant.

Operated 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope and supported scientific observations of the visible Universe. Some of the support highlights of my 16 years in this part time role include:-1. Mapping the Universe in 3D using 2dF led by Boyle for the Galaxy Redshift Survey2. Comet Shoemaker's collisions into Jupiter with Crisp and Meadows from NASA’s JPL3. Supporting Brian Schmidt's (Nobel Prize recipient 2011) supernova observations4. Assisting David Malin's award winning colour astro-photography of faint nebulosity5. Studying the Hubble Deep Field with Ken Lanzetta6. Planet Search program - the search for extra-solar planets with Butler and Tinney7. Thermal imaging - the study of planet forming regions with Burton and Lumsden8. Deciphering the Last Major Invasion of the Milky Way with Gilmore, Wyse and Norris9. Mapping heat flow and weather patterns on planet Venus with David Allen10. Searching for Dark Energy with AAOmega led by Drinkwater etal.

Coonabarabran

Managed building and support systems for Australia’s largest telescope including HVAC, electrical, UPS, data, fire and mission critical services. Supervised maintenance of elevators, hoists and cranes and other heavy equipment. Was responsible for annual aluminizing of the giant 3.9m optical mirror in Australia’s largest high vacuum chamber. Provided technical support for operation and maintenance of astronomical instruments including CCD detectors, spectrographs, robotic fiber and cryogenic systems.In 2005 I drove the complex “DomeAir” and Oil Cooling projects from concept through to completion. This required collaboration with research scientists, consulting engineers and the Bureau of Meteorology to define a variety of engineering and control requirements. I developed and presented the engineering options to international scientific review panels, and ultimately created a precision HVAC system for managing the telescope and mirror environment that anticipated future weather conditions, improving telescope performance and scientific throughput as a result.

Electrical Contracting work for commercial, residential, light industrial and hospitality sectors. Employed and supervised 2 apprentices, 1 full time tradesman and up to 4 sub-contractors.
