I served on the ONPA board for 15 years. My duties included organizing and running the annual contest judging and seminar which includes the annual pictures of the year contest for students and professionals, the annual video storytelling contest and a weekend program of speakers and awards. This task includes finding nationally-recognized photojournalists to judge both the still and online contests, obtaining sponsors to provide awards and services, marketing the event to ONPA members and non-members, conducting the contest judging and emceeing the speaking event. I also directed our annual meeting where we discussed our financial budget, our monthly and annual contests and plan for future membership expectations and events.

As Chief Photographer of 20 weekly newspapers, I managed a staff of eight photographers andtwenty freelancers. This position gave me my first experience at managing a staff and taught me how to get the best work from them on a daily basis. I worked with reporters and editors to put together photo requests, assign the requests, edit photos for publication and conduct annual reviews while also photographing stories.

Deciding to work with my grandparents at their winery was one of the best decisions I ever made.Besides learning the unique craft of growing grapes and making wine, I was able to witness awonderful relationship and learn from their many years of life experience. At their 5-acre vineyard we grew several varieties of grapes including native, vinifera and french-american hybrids. We produced about 10,000 bottles per year in small barrels, both oak and stainless steel. I attended many winemaking conferences, gave hundreds of educational tours, marketed and distributed our wines, and worked with others who were interested in starting new wineries in Ohio.While working at the winery, I continued to freelance in Columbus for various organizationsincluding ThisWeek Newspapers, The Columbus Dispatch and The Associated Press.
