The majority of my career has focused around the development and testing of candidate vaccines and therapeutics for infectious diseases and cancer. Early on, my work involved hands on laboratory investigations to design and enhance alphavirus based vaccine delivery platforms as well as to identify genetic changes that could be used to develop live attenuated vaccines. I then went on to work with a couple different contract research organizations where I served as Principal Investigator or Program Manager to assess the safety and efficacy of candidate vaccines and therapeutics against numerous public health and biodefense indications; and to assess the bioweapons threat posed by viral and bacterial select agents. During this time I received extensive training and experience in Good Laboratory Practices regulations for preclinical studies, evaluated human serum samples from influenza vaccine clinical trials, and developed lot release and stability testing protocols under Good Manufacturing Practice regulations. Most recently, I've returned to academia to oversee the facilities and research activities of an NIH funded high containment laboratory; however, my personal research efforts have continued to focus on discovery and preclinical evaluation of new infectious disease drugs and vaccines either through internal collaborations or with small biotech companies. My goals are to use my technical experience combined with my program management experience to further the development of vaccine and therapeutics for biodefense, food safety and public health indications.Specialties: Vaccine Development and Testing, Viral Based Vaccine Platforms, Molecular Virology, Antiviral Drug Discovery and Evaluation, Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, Program Management

Associate Professor And Director, Laboratory Of Infectious DiseasesUniversity Of South Alabama Jun 2017 - PresentMobile, Alabama, UsAs the Director of the Laboratory of Infectious Diseases (LID), I am responsible for general administrative oversight of the facility to help ensure compliance with all Federal, State and University policies; and to promote the use of the facility in support of innovative new science that can be applied to addressing concerns with infectious diseases of importance to public health and biodefense. The LID is an approximately 29,000 square foot, single-story facility that contains biosafety level (BSL) -2, BSL-3, and animal BSL-3 (A/BSL-3) space as well as administrative and support space. The facility construction was funded in 2010 by a National Institutes of Health C06 construction grant and the facility was commissioned in 2015 following inspection and certification by the CDC. My research interests at the LID are focused on the molecular pathogenesis of emerging and re-emerging viral infections; and the development of animal models and assays to support early stage discovery and evaluation of new medical interventions against an array of infectious disease pathogens. It is my objective to apply the quality research experience I’ve gained over the past 12 years working in contract research organization to the development of models and execution of studies that will satisfy the FDA’s requirements for preclinical safety and efficacy of new drugs and vaccines targeting infectious disease. It is also my intent to implement the University’s current Good Clinical Practice program at the LID to support human clinical trials for infectious diseases and offer these preclinical and clinical services to colleagues and collaborators in academia and industry. -
