biblicalhumanities.org is a community of computer scientists, Bible scholars, and digital humanists collaborating to create open digital resources for biblical studies. Our emphasis is on open resources for biblical languages, such as morphologically tagged texts, treebanks, and lexicons. I founded biblicalhumanities.org with Randall Tan.

B-Greek is a forum where scholars and other experts discuss the fine points of biblical Greek together with beginners who ask questions and receive answers. The archives contain a wealth of information. I run B-Greek.

I manage a team that develops linguistic datasets for the Greek and Hebrew Bible, creates curation systems for Bible-related content and media, and develops tools to support Bible translation and scholarship. My work is at the intersection of computer science, linguistics, biblical studies, natural language processing, information architecture, and Bible translation.

As Program Manager, I worked with translation consultants and translation teams to understand how they think and how they work together, creating new features and improving existing features, working with use cases and focus groups to make sure we understood the real requirements, then using the same focus groups to test features at various stages of development. I also worked with other software teams to integrate their data with Paratext, including linguistic data and scholarly data for biblical Greek and Hebrew. I also helped design extensibility points, including XML authoring and the plugin architecture.

Primary editor of current XQuery and XPath specifications, and of several other XQuery-related specifications, at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the web standards organization founded by Tim Berners-Lee. A lead designer of the W3C XQuery language. Recognized as an InfoWorld 2005 Innovator of the Year for my work on XML query languages. Co-author of Quilt, the query language that became XQuery, and co-author of XQL (XML Query Language), a precursor of XPath. Previously an editor in the XML Schema and Document Object Model Working Groups (see publications list for details); have also participated in the W3C XML Information Set and XML Stylesheet Language (XSL) Working Groups.

Helping design REST architectures and query architectures, mentoring, coordinating designs across teams and product groups. Chair of API Governance Board in EMC Enterprise Content Division. Member of Architecture Community Forum, leading some of the architecture reviews. Organizing hackathons and hands-on tutorials and speaking at conferences. Managing Github for sample code.

Lead editor of JSONiq, a query language for JSON, based on XQuery. One profile of JSONiq removes everything directly related to XML, adding JSON constructors and navigation. Another profile includes the full XQuery language, with added JSON support, allowing queries to consume or produce JSON, XML, or HTML.

Principal Software Engineer on the MRG Messaging team. Apache Committer for the Qpid project. Designed and implemented the Apache Qpid XML Exchange. Primary author of Programming in Apache Qpid, Red Hat MRG Messaging Tutorial, and Red Hat MRG Messaging User's Guide. Continued participation in W3C XML Query Working Group.

XQuery Technology Lead, Program Manager for DataDirect XQuery 1.0 and DataDirect Connect for SQL/XML. Lead designer of DataDirect’s XQuery implementation. In this role I worked primarily with development and marketing, writing functional specifications, reviewing and coordinating development, QA, and documentation, writing white papers and marketing materials, developing value propositions and messaging, conducting press interviews, speaking at conferences, and blogging.

Research and Development Fellow. I represented Software AG on the XML Query and XML Schema Working Groups, was a member of the Tamino architectural team, consulted to the kernel developers on the specification and implementation of XQuery, supervised QuiP XQuery prototype, and supervised Patrick Lehti’s specification and implementation of XQuery Updates, wrote XQuery libraries for various problem domains, including RDF queries. Implemented schema language transformations that were shipped with an earlier version of Tamino (these are now done natively). Created joint proposals with other companies. Spoke at XML conferences, and helped marketing develop product strategies and materials.

Texcel Software, makers of an editorial repository for SGML and XML. Presented for Texcel regularly at XML and SGML conferences. XML Architect and W3C Advisory Committee Representative. Member of Architecture Group; active in designing high-performance, scaleable architectures for XML repositories in future products. Member of the W3C Document Object Model Working Group.

POET Software, makers of an XML/SGML repository and an object oriented database. Chief architect of POET’s XML / SGML repository. Implemented low-level and object-level transaction management in the kernel of the POET object database server. Presented talks for POET at object oriented developer’s conferences and SGML/XML conferences. Did consulting, architectural design, and key account support for customers of POET Software since 1992. Assignments included CompuServe, Novell, The Associated Press, F.A.Davis, Banker’s Systems, U.S. West, PCS SibWare, and a number of less well-known companies. Created a workshop on object database programming in C++. Presented this workshop regularly since 1992, in 5 different countries and throughout the USA, including workshops for CompuServe, Novell, Ericsson, U.S.West, Honeywell, Taylorix, and F.A.Davis. Author of the POET C++ Programmer’s Guide (over 400 pages), C++ Reference Guide (384 pages), Java Loose Binding Programmer’s and Reference Guides (about 150 pages), Visual Basic Programmer’s Guide (about 150 pages), and various installation guides. Co-author of the POET Generic Programming Guide (172 pages). Wrote various programming examples shipped with POET to illustrate object database programming techniques. Wrote Windows-based time management system in C++ using POET. Managed POET’s CompuServe forum from inception to 1997.

Image quality study for the development team of the Siemens desktop scanners. In addition to an extensive literature search, the impact of various effects was simulated by writing image processing software to process TIFF files in both spatial and frequency domains, convert to PostScript, and output images on a calibrated typesetter.

Programmed a multiprogramming monitor in assembly language for an office imaging system sold by Grundig. Investigated a network-based joint editing environment for the German post office. Programmed step motors in assembly language for Siemens and other companies.
