Jonathan Rubinstein is the founder of Joe Coffee, a specialty coffee roaster and collection of award-winning cafes in New York City. Jonathan began his career as a talent agent, during which time he noticed that many of the city’s cafes focused more on their decor and atmosphere than on the coffee they served. In 2002, he left the entertainment field to open a coffee shop that would be obsessively committed to producing coffee as a culinary art. In 2003, Jonathan and his family opened the first Joe Coffee on Waverly Place & Gay Street, a move which ultimately helped pioneer the third wave coffee movement in New York. Since its inception, the company has expanded its retail footprint to over 20 locations across the region, opening its own roasting facility in 2019, and developing thriving wholesale, catering, and public education programs. In 2023, Joe Coffee marked its 20th anniversary, celebrating two decades as New York’s beloved hometown specialty coffee purveyor.
