Given the presence of staunch opposition from religious institutions to similar policies in the West, we aimed to understand the mobilization of the Roman Catholic Church to such programmes in Asia. During this project, I conducted an academic literature review of the field, and canvassed a large amount of primary data from Catholic magazines such as 'The Tablet', 'The Catholic News Service', and The Examiner, as well as national sources including 'The Observer', 'The New York Times', 'The Manila Bulletin' and 'The Times of India'. In addition to archival sources I interviewed several individuals affiliated with the Church in India, and maintained a research network of over 20 research contacts, including theologians, members of the clergy and fellow researchers. The purpose of this was to understand the provision of Emergency powers in the constitution at a time when the incipient nation was still negotiating between Central and Federal Rule. We then examined the manner in which these powers have been abused during the declarations of Emergency in 1975 under Indira Gandhi, and then in 2019 under Narendra Modi. I also analysed territorial debates between the central and state governments of India, to examine the reformation and divison of federated states by studying over 100 archival maps, and drawing provisional maps of my own to chart the change of territorial borders over time. This research project contributed to one published article, and an upcoming book project. Show less -
