About Jonathan Bourne

I’m a highly motivated, organised and creative data scientist with a strong academic background and 7 years’ experience finding solutions to complex business problems across the finance, energy, housing, recruitment and conservation sectors. With a PhD in complex network analysis and a Masters in datascience, I apply critical thinking and academic rigour to help stakeholders define the right questions, before gathering, manipulating, exploring, interpreting and modelling data to discover insights, make predictions and help organisations make better decisions in the face of uncertainty.Working with large structured and unstructured datasets, I have proven expertise in data analysis, methodology design, model development and enhancement, documentation writing, results delivery and interpretation. Bringing strong communication skills and experience in cross-functional environments, I’m highly adept at translating technical content for non-technical stakeholders and business audiences, using data visualisation tools to effectively inform decision makers.Personally, I thrive on bringing order and structure, and removing painful processes and bottlenecks to reduce the burden of inefficiencies and free individuals and organisations to focus on the strategic job at hand. I love nothing more than solving problems with robust, repeatable, time-saving solutions that improve quality and make everything easier. To date, I’m particularly proud of:Implementing an open-source library for measuring ship performance. The library replicates the ITTC global standard and providing clear documentation and transparency.Leading the team that won the US Department of State's 2017 Zoo hackathon, where we developed an image recognition anti-poaching tool using deep learning.Creating a cost model of hydro power plants based on thier physical characteristics, which outperformed the nationally used benchmark model.Developing the SETSe (Strain Elevation Tension Spring embeddings) algorithm, which can be used for a range of graph and network applications such as clustering, graph differentiation and classification, dynamics in social groups, and robustness of networks under attack. My github is at https://github.com/JonnoBI am skilled in:Data analysisData cleaningData visualisationData centric modellingAlgorithmic designAlgorithmic optimisationClusteringGraphical modelsNetwork scienceMachine learningDeep learningUn/Supervised learningDocumentationStructured dataUnstructured dataRPythonNLPDockerSQLCloud platforms: AWS & HPC

Perform freelance data science, machine learning and statistical work for industry and academia. - Built an NLP model for Legal Monitor using data cleaning, data centric modelling and deep learning techniques to accurately predict the practice area of lawyers and deliver super human capability. - Led the team that won the US Department of State's 2017 Zoo hackathon, developing an anti-poaching machine learning tool using deep learning. - All projects have involved an extensive range of data science and machine learning activities such as ETL, clustering, supervised and unsupervised modelling, data exploration, in production solutions and NLP. The work has been performed in R and Python.- Data Science analysis and advice for Action on Empty Homes
  • Ucl
    Phd Student
    Ucl Jan 2017 - Sep 2021
    London, United Kingdom
The key elements of the PhD used complex unstructured data, algorithmic design and optimisation, extensive data cleaning, monte-carlo simulation and high performance computing. During my PhD I published several peer reviewed scientific articles and created several open source software packages.
  • Financial Conduct Authority
    Data Scientist
Financial Conduct Authority Jul 2016 - Dec 2016
    London, United Kingdom
Worked as a data scientist in the Behavioural Economics and Data Science Unit of the FCA. - Developed classification models to predict financial distress in regulated companies. - Undertook supervised learning (linear and non-linear), clustering, data cleaning, ETL and visualisation. - Worked with cross-functional departments to help them understand their data and how to remove bottlenecks in their workflow using machine learning approaches. - Helped set up the cloud computing system for the department.
  • Statkraft
    Maintenance Analyst
    Statkraft Jan 2012 - Jun 2016
    Oslo Area, Norway
Used data science, regression and clustering techniques to model and report on national and international power station benchmarking. - Introduced data science approaches and machine learning concepts into the power production division of the company. - Developed an interpretable benchmarking model that outperformed the model used by Norwegian power companies. - Used unsupervised techniques to allow comparison of power plant portfolios in ternationally between power companies. - Created a power plant reliability report generator using Bayesian statistics and monte-carlo simulation.
  • General Electric
    Proposal Analyst
    General Electric Dec 2009 - Dec 2011
    Oslo Area, Norway
Developed modular systems and models to support the commercial sales operation. - Developed a modular tendering package, covering both technical and pricing elements, reducing bid time by 90% and dramaticallyreducing errors. - Developed a product reliability model to predict tool lifetime in customer well conditions. - Gave technical presentations internationally to support sales teams.
  • Roxar
    Sales Support Engineer
    Roxar Sep 2007 - Dec 2009
    Stavanger Area, Norway
During my time in this role, I redesigned the cost model to create a modular tender package covering the full subsea product range. This modular approach covered both technical and cost aspects of the bidding process, dramatically reducing bid preparation time—the modular nature of the process allowed for iterative changes resulting in improved bid quality. I created a product reliability database and used this as a dataset to predict the estimated lifetime given the reservoir conditions. The predictions were made using a model based on the Weibull distribution. In addition, I provided support to the international sales teams giving technical presentations throughout the Middle East, Asia and South America to companies such as Shell, Petronas, Total, Petrobras and Repsol.
