Coordinated and served as the business steward for CDC’s Waterborne Disease and Outbreak Surveillance System (WBDOSS) including collaborating with the U.S. EPA, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists and state and local health departments on the operation of this system, which assesses the health of Americans related to their exposure to contaminated water. Gathered additional reports from non-traditional sources, managed the Waterborne Disease Outbreak database and led the publication of these surveillance results in scientific publications. Served as CDC’s technical expert on the statistical interpretation of surveillance data on waterborne diseases. Provided technical assistance on waterborne disease to other health professionals at CDC, other federal agencies, state and local health departments, and international organizations. -Led the transition of the WBDOSS from a paper-based disease surveillance system to an electronic disease surveillance system. Served as CDC’s technical expert on electronic surveillance for waterborne disease outbreaks.-Provided technical assistance to state and local health departments for the investigation of multiple waterborne disease outbreaks. These outbreaks involved transmission in both recreational and drinking water settings and were caused by multiple pathogens, including parasites (Cryptosporidium, Giardia); bacteria (E. coli, Salmonella); and viruses (norovirus, enterovirus). Served as a technical expert on the investigation of waterborne disease outbreaks.-Conducted statistical analysis of case surveillance data reported on persons with parasitic diseases (giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis), interpreted analysis results, and published a review of these data in a scientific publication. Provided technical assistance on giardiasis and cryptosporidiosis surveillance data to other health professionals at CDC, other federal agencies, state and local health departments, and international organizations.

• Investigated infectious disease outbreaks, including waterborne parasitic disease outbreaks (cryptosporidiosis), foodborne bacterial outbreaks (Enterotoxigenic E. coli and E. coli O157:H7), vector-borne West Nile Virus infections, and school-related outbreaks of MRSA and Pertussis. Outbreak investigation activities included leading the investigation, directing and coordinating the work of team members, designing the outbreak investigation questionnaire, designing the data entry interface and database, recruiting and interviewing cases and controls, executing data entry, performing data analysis, and preparing the publication of outbreak investigation data into scientific publications and internal written reports detailing the epidemiological investigation and findings. • Developed and implemented a study, in collaboration with the IDPH Immunization Section, to investigate the vaccination rates and knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about vaccinations among an Old Order Amish community, an underserved population subset believed to have low vaccination rates. Performed data analysis and interpreted the results of this research. Published these results in a peer-reviewed scientific publication.
