At the request of our Provost, I took on this newly created leadership role (roughly analogous to a dean or associate dean of visual and performing arts elsewhere) as our institution moved away from a traditional department-based administrative/budgetary structure. Duties include:• Ongoing efforts to merge curricular development, recruitment activities, faculty support and evaluation, and administrative oversight for PSU's Art, Dance, Graphic Design, Music/Music Ed, and Theatre Programs• With PSU Financial Affairs, development of Student Labor and Academic Support Budgets for all academic programs in the Visual and Performing Arts Academic Unit• Oversight and approval of all expenditures from those budgets• Membership on the Academic Unit Leadership Council, a body composed of academic leaders university-wide continuing development of our new model for academic governance with direct-to-Provost reporting linesI rotated out of this role during calendar year 2021, and returned to it in January 2022, again at the request of our Provost.

After three years away from administration (see Chair below) during which I focused on digital creative media and online course delivery/management, I returned at the request of administration and faculty colleagues to a leadership role in my discipline. I carry a 3-3 teaching load throughout this service, and received the University’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 2018. Areas of accomplishment include:• Overseeing all aspects of academic programs in Music and Music Education, including budgetary, personnel, curriculum, assessment/planning, student recruitment/admissions/retention, and advocacy issues• Leading transformations in current faculty roster and curricular offerings to address the needs of contemporary musicians and music educators• Maintaining organizational stability and consistency of internal and external messaging during recent unexpected faculty changes due to COVID-related retirements, unexpected resignations, and illness, including hiring and supervising short-term replacement faculty members, advocating for and chairing five national searches for full-time replacement faculty members, and responding effectively to public relations, personnel, and student affairs issues arising from these faculty changes• Working with PSU’s Title IX Coordinator on faculty and student issues related to diversity and inclusion• Overseeing acquisition and installation of new equipment including Wenger instrument lockers and a 17-station Roland digital piano labI rotated out of this role during calendar year 2021, and returned to it in January 2022, again at the request of administration and faculty colleagues.

Responsible for instruction in all areas of music composition, music theory, and aural skills.

I was asked to take on this position by tenured/tenure-track colleagues in our newly-formed faculty union. Duties included:• Gaining familiarity with university-wide promotion, tenure, administration, and oversight procedures• Working closely with the Provost and Director of Human Resources to resolve issues involving faculty colleagues, including P&T, administrative oversight, work performance, discipline, and other contractually defined areas• Serving as point of first contact/intake for both faculty and administrators when such issues arose, ensuring correct interpretation of contracts and policies, and drafting written responses and opinions

As a composer, I'm interested in creating emotionally resonant works that will strongly move both the musicians who perform them and the audiences who hear them. I consider the warm response my music has received from commissioners, conductors, performers, and audience members alike to be one of the most significant artistic achievements of my career.The bulk of my work is for acoustic media, and has won awards including The American Prize in Composition, the Vocal Essence/American Composers Forum Welcome Christmas! Carol Contest, and an Individual Artist Fellowship from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts. My music has been performed by ensembles including VocalEssence, Conspirare, the Boston Cecilia, the Choir of Rochester Cathedral, England, and the New Hampshire Music Festival Orchestra, and at the national conferences of the College Music Society, the International Clarinet Association, the North American Saxophone Alliance, and the Society of Composers, Inc. My work has been published by Alliance Music, American Carillon Music Editions, Gold Branch Music, Manduca Music, Walton Music, and Yelton Rhodes Music, and featured on recordings by artists on Albany, Centaur, and Naxos Records. A CD of my choral work, There Are Many Other Legends, was released by Navona Records.In recent years, I've become interested in creating works for digital media, and that music has been featured in performances, exhibitions, and festivals at Plymouth State, Transylvania University, and the Prague Quadrennial.

Composed new musical works aligned with programming and guest artist needs of this professional-quality chamber choral ensemble, often setting texts with close local ties. The NHMC was recognized as a "Best of NH 2008" by New Hampshire Magazine for this work.

I completed four consecutive three-year terms in this position, and a final term in Spring 2019 as we completed the transition to the Academic Unit administrative model described above. Responsible for administrative oversight of all aspects of a 140-major performing arts department with 13 full-time faculty and 26 adjuncts, including budget, curriculum, personnel, student affairs, and auditions. I carried a 2-2 teaching load throughout this service, and received the University’s Award for Distinguished Scholarship in 2011.
