At Lumen / Streamroot, we built built Mesh, a peer to peer technology aimed to improve content delivery experience at the edge.Mesh combines existing CDN sources with a P2P mesh network, it was designed with a particular focus on video streaming. Mesh Download is a prototype of Mesh with a shift in focus towards the bulk download of very large files, such as games or software updates.I was mainly tasked with:- Proposing improvements to the P2P protocol, as part of the R&D team, with an A/B tests drivenexperimentation protocol centered on video streaming metrics.- The evolution of the C++ core modules, through a new architecture aimed at improving robustness, maintainability, and ease further improvements. We reduced the existing complexity of our library by simplifying its multi-threading model and reducing the use of shared memory.I also helped deliver a new P2P protocol, and download strategies for the MVP of the new Mesh bulk downloader library.

Durant ma thèse, j’ai cherché à appliquer l’état de l’art en système distribué et en protocoles de réplication au design du réseau 5G. Une analyse approfondie de la spécification 5G (3GPP release 16) nous a permis de montrer que les exigences de cohérence de cette spécification étaient trop fortes pour permettre au réseau d’être hautement disponible (d’après le théorème de CAP). Ma thèse se concentre sur une étude de l’usage des données dans le réseau qui nous permet d’en extraire des propriétés de cohérence plus faibles, mais suffisantes pour que le réseau reste correct. Une partie de ces travaux a été publiée à ICIN2020.Mon directeur de thèse était Marc Shapiro. Sofiane Imadali et Frédéric Martelli étaient mes encadrants chez Orange.

My research work consisted in applying the state of the art in distributed systems and replication protocols to the design of the 5G network. As a result of my analysis of the 5G specification (3GPP release 16), we showed that the consistency requirements that were specified were too strong to allow the network to be highly available (according to the CAP theorem).My thesis focuses on a study of the lifecycle of data in the 5G specification to extract weaker consistency properties that are still sufficient to maintain the correctness of the network. Part of this work has been the subject of a paper published at ICIN2020 (https://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/hal-02943802).My advisor was Marc Shapiro, with Sofiane Imadali and Frédéric Martelli from Orange as co-advisors.
