As a graduate student I investigated strategies for restoring threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout to headwater streams in the Sierra Nevada, a project funded by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and conducted in cooperation with the California Department of Fish and Game and U.S. Forest Service. I coordinated all aspects of a multi-year research project, including permits, selection and purchasing of equipment, experimental designs and protocols, transportation of hatchery fish, collection and transportation of wild fish, experimental setup, marking/tagging of fish, data collection, data analysis, and reporting. I recruited, trained, and supervised four paid assistants, two regular volunteers, and at times up to fifteen intermittent volunteers. Studies included experiments comparing response of wild and hatchery stocks to translocation and reintroduction, experiments investigating effects of non-native trout on recently reintroduced natives, a survey of disease prevalence in wild trout, a telemetry/mark-recapture investigation of movement of reintroduced and resident trout, and removal of non-native trout from specific stream reaches.

As an ecologist at Redwood Sciences Laboratory I planned and managed implementation of research into an ecological link between proliferation of aquatic leeches and decline of Cascades frog populations in Lassen Volcanic National Park and Lassen National Forest, California. Funding was procured via a proposal I generated based on field observations and literature synthesis, and submitted to the Lassen National Forest, Superintendent’s Office. I developed a field strategy, served as leader of six-person project team, managed/analyzed the data, and prepared a report for Lassen National Forest. The study involved locating Cascades frog breeding sites, monitoring developing egg masses, swabbing/assessing frogs for signs of disease, conducting focused observations of leech/amphibian interactions, and collecting and identifying six species of leech from the Lassen region, including several species not previously recorded. The study was published in the journal Northwestern Naturalist.

Managed an interagency effort to inventory amphibians, fishes, and invertebrates at Lassen Volcanic National Park, with the goal of determining the effect of non-native fishes on native aquatic organisms. Acquired permits, equipment, vehicles, etc., established and maintained a temporary remote field station in Mineral, California, and attended to other administrative aspects of the project. Revised protocol, developed field reference materials, and trained six-person field team. Directed three 2-person crews in fish and amphibian census and habitat surveys at more than 350 sites, and invertebrate sampling at a subset of sites. Conducted data analysis and prepared report with management recommendations for the National Park Service.
