Eea Migrant Worker Officer
Darlington, United Kingdom
This specialist role focussed on the assessment of non-UK nationals’ eligibility to student support under the complex migrant worker criteria, and under Acquired Right of Permanent Residence. This role centred on the close analysis of evidence relating to applicants’ employment circumstances, familial relationships and immigration history. This included the requesting and subsequent analysis of official Home Office reports. Discretionary decision making, supported by detailed knowledge of EEA regulations and guidelines provided by the Department for Education, played a large part in the role. Additionally, strong problem-solving skills – in response to the identification of gaps, errors or irregularities – were essential to the role. I regularly volunteered to undertake cases referred from other departments, most often SLC’s Customer Relations Officers (in response to customer complaints) and the company’s in-house Practitioners (usually in response to Formal Appeals decisions), taking ownership of these cases and seeing them through to completion. I regularly acted as point-of-contact, using my expert knowledge and interpersonal skills to field queries and provide assistance to other team members and colleagues from other teams and departments. I also handled management escalations, BACS tape checking as well as complaints and appeals escalations
