About Jonathan Trent

To address the escalating food, water, and energy crises, I left my Civil Servant position at NASA to found UpCycle Systems (UCS). I know this will be risky, but I feel an obligation to try to make a difference. I have been so privileged to work with amazing people at such outstanding institutions: undergrad at UCSC, grad at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, postdoc at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry, and positions at the University of Copenhagen, University of Paris at Orsay, Boyer Center for Molecular Medicine at Yale Medical School, Argonne National Lab, NASA Ames Research Center, University of California Santa Cruz, Tokyo University Agriculture and Technology, and the California Academy of Science. My career has included research in marine science, microbiology and cell biology, medicine, nanotechnology, engineering, and environmental sciences and now I must help to address the escalating food, water, and energy crisis. From 2010-2013, I led the NASA/CEC project "OMEGA" (Offshore Membrane Enclosures for Growing Algae)--a system for growing microalgae on wastewater in floating photobioreactors to produce biofuels. While the system captures carbon and prepares future generations for sea-level rise, the project concluded that it would only be possible to produce biofuels as part of an integrated system that included aquaculture for food, wastewater treatment and reuse, and solar for electricity and heat. OMEGA needed to be an integrated food, water, and energy system. From 2013-2018, I focused on the OMEGA Global initiative (OGI) to costal communities. In 2018, I pivoted from the offshore system to an onshore design that I'm calling UpCycle Systems. I'm excited about the potential of UpCycle Systems and you will be too when you find out more about it.

In biomolecular engineering my research team at NASA with connections to UCSC explored how molecular recognition and self-assembly of proteins from organisms living in the most extreme environments on Earth could be combined with genetic engineering to create useful nanostructures. For example we used self-assembled 2D crystals of ring-forming proteins from organisms living in near boiling sulfuric acid could be used to arrange magnetic nano-particles on a surface in a patterned array--structures that could be used for data storage. We also used thermostable proteins as a scaffold for juxtaposing enzymes with different functions to efficiently release sugars from celluolse--a system that could be used for biofuels production. We also worked on self-assembling nanowires for electronics and robust peptide adjuvants for medicine. Send me a note if you'd like references to any of this work...

In Exobiology, I study the physiological adaptations of extremophiles. Formerly, I conceived and led the OMEGA project--a system of floating plastic photobioreactors (PBRs), using domestic wastewater and a source of CO2 from coastal cities to grow algae, purify wastewater, and provide food from aquaculture. The algae are used for biofuels, fertilizer, animal feed, and other products, while the system cleans wastewater and sequesters carbon. The offshore platform provides access to coastal waters for aquaculture and for alternative energy (solar, wind, and wave). For biofuels and wastewater treatment the OMEGA system must be enormous, but by being offshore and using wastewater for nutrients, it does not compete with agriculture for freshwater, fertilizer, or land. The goals of the NASA OMEGA project are to 1) evaluate the feasibility of OMEGA and 2) transfer the technology to others. Background of the OMEGA project is at: http://www.algaeindustrymagazine.com/nasas-omega-scientist-dr-jonathan-trent/. Having spent many years studying organisms living in one of the most extreme environments on Earth, volcanic hot springs, NASA invited me to be part of their Astrobiology Institute and to ponder what life forms may exist in worlds beyond Earth. Although seemingly academic, such exercises are frequently useful in very practical ways. For example, my research on the molecular adaptations of organisms living in near-boiling sulfuric acid led to an understanding of the highly conserved heat shock proteins (aka "chaperonins"), which were thought to mediate protein folding in vivo and we discovered stabilize cell membranes (Trent, et al. 2003. Intracelluar localization of a group II chaperonin indicates a membrane-related function. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, USA, 100: 15589-15594). We also used thermostable proteins to build robust, self-assembled nanostructures with potential applications in data storage, medicine, and biofuels production. As indicated above my work at NASA culminated in the integrated system called OMEGA. For overview see: https://www.nasa.gov/ames/spacescience-and-astrobiology/interview-with-jonathan-trent

Omega Global Initiative (Ogi) Jan 2015 - Aug 2019
The “OMEGA Global Initiative” (OGI) is currently incorporated as a non-profit under the 501(c)3 of the Green Cities Fund. OGI's mission is to expand the availability of clean water, non-agricultural food, and green energy in coastal cities by introducing floating platforms offshore that integrate the most appropriate technologies for local conditions. Potable water is efficiently recovered from municipal wastewater in some locations combined with seawater, using a combination of filtration, distillation, and/or osmosis. Food is provided by multi-trophic, open or closed aquaculture that is carefully monitored for environmental impact. Energy is recovered from solar electricity, solar thermal, and photosynthesis from algal biomass using nutrients from wastewater. The OGI's goal is to identify and qualify good OMEGA sites and then orchestrate the design and deployment of the offshore infrastructure with the integration of the most appropriate water, aquaculture, and energy technologies for optimum efficiency. To qualify OMEGA sites and ultimately to commercialize integrated floating systems, OGI uses a 4-phase/8-step protocol that is described on the OGI website. A number of sites are under consideration most notably the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Ha Long, Viet Nam. While OGI currently functions as a non-profit, a for profit entity is under development for socially conscious investors. The OGI website is: http://www.omegaglobal.org.

At Argonne, I was focused on basic research on "extremophiles" (organisms that live in what we consider extreme environments). In particular, I was studying if thermo-acidophiles, organisms living in near-boiling sulfuric acid in volcanic areas, could help DOE clean up some of its toxic wastes.
