Building on previous experience in Gilead's Process Development group this role saw me taking on additional responsibilities in both project and people management. Responsibilities included being tasked with integrating multiple small molecule assets acquired through external acquisitions into Gilead's development portfolio in both oncology and inflammation. This included working on projects where the assets were being jointly developed by two independent organizations necessitating exceptional communication and trust building across teams tasked with bringing these assets forward. This role expanded to significant amounts of cross-functional responsibilities where I was tasked with overseeing not only the manufacturing of the API, but also the formulations, analytical and regulatory aspects of small molecule development.During this time I also took on broader roles of leading departmental recruiting efforts and participating in company wide recruiting and outreach efforts. Green chemistry also became a focus of my efforts in this role as I co-lead a group of passionate scientists focused on integrating green chemistry efforts and principles of sustainability into Gilead's manufacturing framework. I was also fortunate enough to become heaviliy involved in the American Chemical Society's Green Chemistry Pharmaceutical Round Table in which Gilead is an active member. A nice additional outcome of this focus on green chemistry is that I was able to spearhead an effort that saw Gilead's process chemistry department receive the first My Green Lab sustainability certification for any laboratory department within the company at the GOLD level. People management experience also expanded during this time where I recruited and managed a group of two PhD level scientists together with experienced MS level staff. My role here is primarily to craft and shepherd career growth and understanding of process chemistry's role in the broader drug development process.

In this position I took on roles of increasing responsibility mainly tasked with delivering clinical grade material to support assets in Gilead's development portfolio. This included project leadership responsibilities where I was entrusted with leading the research activities of a team of scientists in order to supply the clinic with API against tight timelines. This role also encompassed being an individual contributor on programs lead by others where I would develop efficient small molecule manufacturing processes to be executed in pilot and manufacturing plant settings to deliver on project timelines. My experience here spanned numerous disease areas such as oncology, inflammation and virology. People management was also part of this role where I was responsible for hiring a BS/MS level chemist integrating them into the process development department and then fostering their career development.

In this position I continued to work in the Early Phase Chemical Development group where I was charged with delivering clinical grade material for a number of drug candidates. The disease areas that I worked in included major depressive disorder, arteriosclerosis, hepatitis C, rheumatoid arthritis, and HIV. Experience highlights include delivering 18 kg of a highly potent, dose < 1 mg, compound with excellent chemical and chiral purity and successfully scaling up cryogenic lithiation chemistry to 420 kg scale at a contract research organization. During this time I also assumed co-responsibility of the Safety Action Committee where I oversaw a number of facility and safety culture improvements within the department all with the overarching goal of making BMS a safer place to work for all employees.
