Jonathan is a permanent member of the Irish Defence Forces serving as a Corporal in the 1st Mechanised Infantry Company (1Mech) in the Defence Forces Training Centre (DFTC). The 1st Mechanised Infantry Company are a permanently active mechanised unit carrying out various challenging tasks such as ATCP (Aid to The Civil Power) but are also responsible for training APC (Armoured personnel carrier) crews, commanders, and soldiers in the various TTPs (Tactics, techniques and procedures) associated with mechanised operations. Jonathan is trained in operating the Mowag Piranha’s DRWS (Duel remote weapon station) system as well as the tactics techniques and procedures required for the Mowag APC in UN peacekeeping overseas missions. Jonathan has obtained valuable instructor, mentorship public speaking and teaching methods from instructing on recruit, 2-3 star course and most recently a potential NCO’s course. Jonathan is also Recce (Reconnaissance) qualified which involves obtaining strategic information by visual observation or other detection methods, information about the activities and resources of an enemy or potential enemy, or to secure data concerning the meteorological, hydrographic or geographic characteristics of a particular area in all weather conditions. This helps the Defence Forces to obtain valuable ISTAR (Intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance) in certain situations. Jonathan has undertaken various mental health and suicide prevention courses as mental health in both the male and military community is a passion of his and hopes to improve and spread awareness throughout the community having taken part in a 55km’s with 55lb’s event in December 2020 raising €7,680 for Movember Ireland which he had the honour of being made an Ambassador for in 2021.
