I am leading Environment and Sustainability implementation for Work Winning in Balfour Beatty Rail and for the Rail Plant and Design and Engineering businesses. This is a key role to ensure we are delivering the Balfour Beatty Sustainability Strategy - Building New Futures and also meeting our customers' sustainability aspirations.This includes managing environmental and social sustainability input to a range of tenders within a multi billion pound pipeline, building on my success of supporting the winning of over £2bn of work in previous roles within Balfour Beatty.I am ensuring the Rail Plant business is delivering against its sustainability objectives and targets and, particularly the exploration and implementation of new technologies to reduce the carbon emissions from our Plant - as part of our detailed decarbonisation plan. I am also leading environmental compliance and our engagement with the local community and how we deliver Social Value.

A time-limited role as part of the Sustainability Senior Leadership Team at Balfour Beatty to lead a review of the materials section of our sustainability strategy - Building New Futures, including our ambition to Generate Zero Waste by 2040, to develop a circular economy approach, increase recycled content and responsibly sourced materials and reduce the embodied carbon of materials. This included delivering reports, presentations and recommendations for how we can realise this vision and the challenging targets contained within it and integrate it into our core business processes.

I led environmental management and sustainability performance for the Specialist Businesses within UK Construction Services. These included Balfour Beatty Living Places, Balfour Beatty Kilpatrick, Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering, Balvac and Telecoms. A key part of this was developing sustainability action plans to reduce carbon, reuse materials and demonstrate the Social Value provided to our customers.I previously supported the Regional business of Balfour Beatty Construction Services UK within London, the South East and East Anglia. This covered projects ranging from small developments to schemes in excess of £100M, ensuring they implemented appropriate sustainability action plans and met company and customer sustainability requirements. Key areas of focus included identifying and implementing measures to drive environmental and financial efficiencies, for example through improving waste management and reducing carbon emissions. Sectors covered included residential and commercial construction, infrastructure and highways. Both roles also supported work winning and business development, identifying key customer requirements and ensuring we were best positioned to meet them. During this role I helped secure significant new contracts through leading the sustainability submissions for these tenders.

This role was to lead the Sustainability agenda within the Major Projects division of Balfour Beatty Construction Services UK, providing maternity cover for the incumbent Head of Sustainability. The focus was to ensure that major projects delivered on their sustainability commitments and contribute to achieving Balfour Beatty Group sustainability objectives. Projects were primarily within the Highways, Infrastructure, Power and Ground Engineering sectors, as well as some flagship complex construction projects with combined revenue in the region of £1billion.

The Commission was established to fulfil a bid commitment and provided independent assurance to the Olympic Board and publicly to enable the sustainability objectives of the London 2012 programme to be achieved and to support a sustainable legacy. This role has included:• Leading assurance engagements and reviews on behalf of the Commission and writing reports on the subjects or processes assured.• Carrying out research, reviewing data provided, interviewing people at all levels of multiple organisations, assessing performance, auditing on site, and using the findings from all these areas to determine the Commission’s assurance opinion.• Carrying out sustainability assurance in many different organisations, including a wide range of companies in varying industry sectors, local, regional and national government and government agencies.• Setting up and managing the Commission’s continuous monitoring programmes, tracking all key sustainability commitments made by London 2012 and all of the Commission’s 235 recommendations – linking detailed information and evidence to the strategic picture.• Understanding detailed challenges and problems occurring in the London 2012 programme and recommending effective solutions that delivered best practice and enabled targets to be achieved

Co-ordinating environmental action and sustainability initiatives across Greenwich Council, including:• Reviewing sustainability issues across the Council and developing a new strategy and action plan to drive improvement and support the Council’s Comprehensive Performance Assessment.• Advising the planning department on the sustainability implications of new developments and regeneration projects.• Managing the Council’s relationship with the local Groundwork Trust. • Managing staff working on environmental projects for the authority and staff on joint projects with other Boroughs.• Liaison at a regional level on strategic projects and with the Council’s elected Cabinet Members.

Co-ordinating environmental policy and sustainability initiatives within Medway Council and with local businesses, including:• Writing and implementing a new sustainability policy, strategy and action plan supported by sustainability assessment techniques.• Research, development and implementation of an environmental management system.• Working with the Kent Sustainable Business Partnership to deliver schemes to assist local businesses in improving their sustainability performance.• Securing significant European funding with other Councils and public bodies to deliver environment and sustainability initiatives.
