    An internship involving microwave waveform generation for coherent control of quantum sensors.Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a powerful and non-invasive method of chemical analysis. However, it has limited sensitivity, which prevents its use in the analysis of small sample volumes. The sensitivity can be improved with larger applied magnetic fields, but this comes with higher cost and very limited portability. Realising NMR spectroscopy with spatial resolution on the nano- to micro- scale requires a radically different approach, but has huge potential in fundamental science and real-world applications, such as single-cell analysis, surface chemistry and point-of-care medical analysis.Colour centre defects in wide bandgap semiconductors have atom-like electronic transitions that can be probed with optical and microwave techniques, and thanks to a spatial extension on the scale of the atomic lattice, they can provide an exquisite probe of their local environment. By integrating these artificial atoms into optoelectronic devices, we are developing quantum sensors to underpin nanoscale NMR spectroscopy. To control these sensors, amplitude and/or phase modulated microwave frequency signals are used. These waveforms are typically generated with very high precision by high performance, and very expensive, arbitrary waveform generators (AWG). The aim of this project is to design, build and test a replacement microwave waveform generator using cheap and off-the-shelf microcontrollers, field programmable gate arrays (FPGA), and discrete electronic components. Not only does this has the benefit of being much cheaper but it also allows for the configuration of the device in software rather than in hardware. Hence, making this solution more versatile and configurable.
