Work experience doesn't show that I've been working with computers and training myself as a programmer for the past 16 years. Computers have always been somewhere between personal challenge and obsession to me, and I would love nothing more than to be given a job where I go into work every day and am handed a software problem to solve.In seeking out that goal, The Air Force taught me leadership and teamwork, and is also where I discovered that if you have a passion for a certain skill set, you'll learn it even if you don't do it as part of your day-to-day job. Despite the fact that software development has nothing to do with the life of an Air Force 3C3X1, I taught myself C++ and object-oriented programming on my own time, doing my best to focus on establishing good habits rather than simply repurposing code ad-hoc.As a result, DeVry was an exercise in programming fluency rather than a crash course in software development, where I learned not to fear new languages or unfamiliar libraries, and where I worked to improve habits of documentation and commenting. It was also a breath of fresh air by being the first time in my life as a self-appointed programmer that I was face to face with other programmers; what a relief to talk about such nerdy things as the advantages and disadvantages of recursion as an alternative to looping, and get feedback instead of blank stares!Now, for the time being, I'm unemployed and getting antsy; I never feel quite right without a routine and a programming challenge. In-between relocation and job hunting I've been crash-coursing myself on the wonderful world of OpenGL, in the hopes that I can at least pick up a new skill in this inevitable downtime.

  Don't let the long title fool you. The "AFIOC", as the AF Information Operation Center was (and to my knowledge, still is) calling itself, had a habit of taking a minor additional duty from the Com-planners' job description and having them act in that capacity full time rather than their usual duties. That was the nature of the beast at the time, and possibly still today; Info-Ops being a relatively new unit designation, there were no troop specialty codes for units operating under that designation, so Info-Ops units instead re-purposed troops with Com Squadron specialties instead. As such, I spent the greater three years of my time there as a budget analyst instead of a Com project manager.Military funding is a tricky beast; a unit's funding comes from multiple different flavors of money through "program codes," each of which is legally allocated to specific parts of the unit's operations. As a budget analyst, it was my job to track the quarter-to-quarter changes in mission needs vs program code funding, in order to deliver an accurate projection of the shortfalls, surpluses, and balance issues to the wing commander and the budget office proper.As additional duties, I served as a unit webmaster and "client support administrator," a sort of in-house first line helpdesk position tasked with deploying software updates and hardware upgrades, as well as technical support to the office they are assigned to in order to streamline computer support on the subunit level.
