Appointed by the Estate Management department to cover projects commenced by a staff member now retired. Wide and varied portfolio of land and property generally outside the individual colleges. Currently designing BS.8300 accessible timber decked ramps in 3D modelling to the Botanic Garden, undermined 2-years ago by a badger sett with the ground now subsiding. Other small works include relaying 19th century service duct covers and York flag paving to a large timber-framed glazed temperate and palm house, installing revetment edging to a large pond, asbestos removal and land drainage works to the university farm, suspended ceiling renewal following contamination to a veterinarian building, Renewal of public signage, small repairs to listed buildings, engineering works and air-conditioning installations to laboratories, and general maintenance / accessibility audits to external circulation of diverse college campuses.

Initially, this was to have been a Responsive Repairs appointment but the role was created following disclosure at interview of specialist knowledge of domestic moulds and successfully applied solutions undertaken. Caseload to end of February was 168 properties over some half dozen local authorities, with personal inspections, illustrated reports including infra-red imaging, thermohygrometer and pinless moisture meter readings, air quality assessments etc, together with quantified schedules of work to be carried out using various treatments appropriate to conditions found.

Managing various capital projects to the value of £8.8m, focusing on fire safety remediation to PFI main hospital scheme subject to an enforcement notice, monitoring contractors’ progress against an agreed programme to determine compliance with the agreed specification and procedures whilst ensuring that the impact on clinical efficiency of the hospital is minimised and that the project runs to agreed budgets and deadlines. Other projects included modifying ward layouts to create NHS-compliant additional bed spaces, overseeing the construction of a new radiotherapy wing to contain high-tech linear accelerator equipment, a modular renal dialysis unit and car park expansion, main generator and switchgear replacement at another site, provision of new magnetic resonance imaging equipment in a self-contained unit annexed to an existing clinic and the general refurbishment relocation of several clinics and services within an older hospital – all of which involved input into the design process, compliance with statutes and health regulations and negotiation with provider services etc.
