Physicist specialising in lasers and photonics, recently joined Aquark Technologies after 6 years of postdoctoral research. My PhD research focused on diode laser mode-locking and stabilisation for ultra-cold atomic physics experiments, as well as a more product focused project based around trace level water vapour detection in optical cavities using novel laser modulation schemes. Following this, my postdoctoral research spanned the fields of mode-locked optically pumped semiconductor disk lasers (otherwise known as VECSELs), Membrane External-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (MECSELs), and nonlinear optics in Tantalum Pentoxide planar waveguides for frequency comb applications.Following my research within academia, I have joined Aquark Technologies - a recent startup and spinout from the University of Southampton - with an objective to develop and commercialise a novel ultracold atom system for quantum sensors and timing.I also have a passion for landscape photography, and can be seen under a dark cloth using a large format analogue camera - search 'Jonathan Woods Photography'.
